Goal and objectives of the project

- Creating a database of biodiversity on medicinal plants in the Southern islands. Among them, identify rare and endemic medicinal plants for conservation.
- Collecting indigenous knowledge about medicinal remedies from local people.
- Assessing biological activities of some potential medicinal plants for treatment and local economic development.

Main results

- Theoretical results:
+ A study into the medicinal plant resources from the Southern islands resulted in the identification of 1113 species of medicinal plants belonging to 620 genera, 166 families of four phyla of vascular plants (Lycopodiophyta, Polypodiophyta, Pinophyta, and Magnoliophyta). Of those, 99 species were listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book (Part II, Plants, 2007), the Medicinal plants in Vietnam’s Red List (2019), and the Decision No 84/2021/NĐ-CP.
+ Building a database of 300 numbers of 117 medicinal plants which are input and managed with the BRAHMS and MS Excel softwares.
+ 351 specimens sampled and stored at the VNM herbarium.
+ Identifying chemical structure of 4 compounds from the species Macrosolen tricolor. The biological activity of extracts from Macrosolen tricolor shows that they have anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activity against breast cancer cells.
+ Publishing two scientific papers (SCIE journal), one of which is in the international journal  Taiwania and the other in Journal of Chemistry, and four articles in the list of the State Council for Professorship.
- Applied results: A set of databases and specimens are used for research, study and exhibitions. The results of the project are the basis for applied research in related fields.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- A first ever digital database of medicinal plants in the islands of the Southern region has been built based on actual field work, which is managed by a professional software and compatible with the international GBIF platform.
- Publishing a medicinal plant as new species to science Homalomena perplexa K.Z.Hein, Vuong  Bao & V.S.Dang (Araceae) in Taiwania in 2023.
