Goal and objectives of the project

- The project’s main goal is to conduct the 8th VAST-FEBRAS joint expedition aboard the research vessel “Akademik Oparin” in coastal and shelf underwater banks, as well as islands Vietnamese southern continental shelf to investigate marine biodiversity, environment, biochemistry, marine toxicity, coral reef communities, and also to collect samples of marine organisms, micro-organisms for biomedical and pharmaceutical study.
- A post-cruise workshop will be organized, with the participation of Vietnamese and Russian scientific institutions and managers, to evaluate the investigation results and popularize scientific activities in the South China Sea.

Main results

- Data on biodiversity of plankton and invertebrate in bottom communities of the coastal waters, coral reefs, community structure of soft bottom in the deep-sea benthos.
- Data on coral reef (molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms, hard corals, soft corals, coral reef fishes), dataset on bottom coverage, reef fish density and coral reef regeneration potential.
- Samples of micro-organisms, invertebrate, micro-plastic for biomedical, calcium structure analysis, genetic studies on eDNA profiling
- Collect optical data for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and suspended matter (SPM) for detailed analysis of inorganic, organic components (PIC and POC) for developing suspended matter (SPM), algorithm for high spatial resolution satellite image, Trios RAMSES.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- Providing valuable scientific materials in the fields of biodiversity, biochemistry, environment in Vietnamese waters, especially offshore waters.
- This expeditoin is the first time to collect the data of biodiversity invertebrate in bottom communities, geological and hydrological parameters in offshore water.

Products of the project

- Collection of biodiversity of plankton and invertebrate in bottom communities of the coastal waters, coral reefs and continental shelf for detailed study and museum collection
-  Photographic and film materials where the survey takes samples and dataset on bottom coverage, reef fish density and coral reef regeneration potential.
- 250 samples of the Molluscs, Crustaceans, and Polychaetes groups were gathered during Oparin surveys for the Museum of Oceanography using for scientific research and public display.
- Documents and media reportage on Vietnam-Russia cooperation: Investigation on biodiversity, biochemistry and environment in Vietnamese waters (the report was broadcast on VTV1, KTV in June 2023).
