Project's information

Project's title Research on species composition and initial survey of chemical composition of liverworts (Marchantiophyta) and hornworts (Anthocerotophyta) in the northern mountains of Vietnam
Project’s code KHCBTĐ.02/21-23
Research hosting institution Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources
Project leader’s name Nguyen Van Sinh
Project duration 01/01/2021 - 31/12/2023
Project’s budget 1,500 million VND
Classify Grade B
Goal and objectives of the project

To determine the species composition of liverworts and hornworts in the northern mountains of Vietnam and to determine the chemical composition and biological activity of one liverwort species.

Main results
- Theoretical results: The liverwort and hornwort species composition of the northern mountains of Vietnam has been determined. The chemical composition and biological activity of the liverwort species Porella perrottetiana (Mont.) Trevis has been determined. One new for science liverwort species has been discovered and published (Gymnomitrion vietnamicum Bakalin et Vilnet).
- Applied results: Two collections of liverworts and hornworts have been created. One collection comprises of 350 specimens of 146 species and contains specimens from Dien Bien, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces. The other collection comprises of 388 specimens of 170 species and contains specimens from Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Bac Can and Lai Chau provinces. A dataset has been created for 738 specimen that includes 281 morphological pictures and contains information on geographic position, altitude, location and habitat at the place each specimen has been collected.
Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

This study gives the full current picture of the species composition of liverworts and hornworts of northern mountains of Vietnam. The five papers (one in Scopus journal and four in SCIE journals), the two new collections of 738 specimens of liverworts and hornworts, and their data are the important basis for further study of liverworts and hornworts in Vietnam. The project also provides the chemical composition and biological activity of a liverwort species (Porella perrottetiana (Mont.) Trevis).

Products of the project

- Scientific papers in referred journals (list): Six papers (one in Scopus journal and five in SCIE journals)
- Patents (list): None
- Technological products (describe in details: technical characteristics, place): From the liverwort species Porella perrottetiana two new compounds have been found: perrottetianal E (formula C20H28O4) and (+)-oplopanone C ((+)-11-methyxyoplopanone) (formula C16H28O3). It was determined  that total extract residue and EtOAc extract residue of this liverwort species were active on the liver cancer cell line (Hep-G2) with IC50 = 3.51 ± 0.21 μg/mL and IC50 = 4.23 ± 0.86 μg/mL, respectively.
- Other products (if applicable): Collections of 738 specimens of Marchantiophyta and Anthocerotophyta; Dataset of 738 specimens of Marchantiophyta and Anthocerotophyta; Report on species diversity of the liverworts and hornworts in the northern mountains of Vietnam; Report on the chemical composition and biological activity of a liverwort species (Porella perrottetiana (Mont.) Trevis).

Research region

Data and materials for further research on Vietnamese liverworts and hornworts in the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources and for teaching on liverworts and hornworts.

Recommendations To receive further support on study of liverworts and hornworts.
