Project duration 01/01/2021 - 31/12/2022
Project’s budget 200 million VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project
- Research on the potential utilization of two medicinal plant species: Artemisia vulgaris and Blumea balsamifera in the Lao People's Democratic Republic to contribute database on the biology and chemistry of medicinal plants in Laos
- Capacity building to the Lao People's Democratic Republic in using laboratory equipment (biochemical field) to exploit and evaluate medicinal plant resources in Lao PDR.
Main results
- Raw material samples and 12 specimens of two species have been collected, in which: 05 specimens of Artemisia vulgaris L. and 07 specimens of Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC. has, determining the distribution, ecological characteristics and usage of 02 species in Laos. The distribution location, ecological characteristics and usage of 02 research species in Laos have been determined.
- From Artemisia vulgaris L. species three chemical compounds were isolated and determined as follows: Pinoresinol O--D-monoglucoside (AV1); (+)-medioresinol 4'-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (AV2) and syringaresinol glucoside (AV3).
- From Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC.) species three chemical compounds were isolated and determined as follows: 4-O-methyldihydroquercetin (1); Balsamiferoside A (2) và isohemiphloin (3).
- Participated in training support, instructed staff of the Lao research team on methods of collecting samples, creating specimens and processing specimens in the field sampling process, methods of collecting information on how to use medicinal materials, and at the same time instructing methods of creating extracts from research plant samples.
Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

Field and laboratory skill of the Lao Institute of Science and Innovation’s staff have been strengthened, such as: sample collection, specimen creation and sample processing, investigation and collection of information on how to use medicinal materials,  extraction steps to analyze the chemical composition of two species of Artemisia vulgaris L. and Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC. that grow and develop in Laos.
