Project's information

Project's title Identification of anti-lung cancer phytochemicals from the genus Vitex in Vietnam
Project’s code QTKR01.01/22-23
Research hosting institution Institute of Marine Biochemistry (IMBC)
Coordinating unit, co-chair National Research Foundation of Korea
Project leader’s name PhD. Phan Thi Thanh Huong and PhD. SeonJu Park
Project duration 01/01/2022 - 30/06/2024
Project’s budget 200 million VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project

-Isolation and identification of anti-lung cancer constitutents from the genus Vitex growing in Vietnam
-Education and strengthen the research ability of participated members
-Strengthen the scientific collaboration between Institute of Marine Biochemistry, VAST, Vietnam and KBSI.

Main results

-Preparation of methanol extract and screening anti-lung cancer activity of 3 Vitex species including Vitex trifolia L., Vitex trifolia subsp. litoralis Steenis and Vitex limonifolia Wall.. Based on screening results, the fruits of V.trifolia was selected for further investigation.
-Isolation and determination of 11 compounds, including 9 iridoids, 1 flavone and 1 lignan from the fruits of V. trifolia. Three compounds were previously undescribed. Two among isolated compounds, VT10 and VT11 have cytotoxic effects on PC9 cells with IC50 of 5.36 and 11.42 µM.
-Strengthen research ability of participated members on the isolation, structural elucidation and evaluation of anti-lung cancer property.
-The results were published on a paper belonging SCIE indexed journal and contributed on the graduation of 1 master of sciences.
-Strengthen scientific collaboration between Vietnam and Korea, VAST and NRF organizations, Insitute of Marine Biochemistry-VAST and Korea Basic Research Institute.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

-Isolation and determination of three previously undescribed compounds and two compounds have cytotoxic effects on PC9 cells with IC50 of 5.36 and 11.42 µM
-This is the first scientific collaboration project between Institute of Marine Biochemistry and Korea Basic Research Institute.
