Project's information

Project's title Evaluating the plastic waste accumulation at beaches in Thanh Hoa province.
Project’s code VAST06.03/20-21
Research hosting institution Institute of Geography
Project leader’s name Nguyen Thi Lan Huong
Project duration 01/01/2020 - 31/12/2022
Project’s budget 600 million VND
Classify Grade B
Goal and objectives of the project

- Classification of the plastic wastes based on properties and evaluating the plastic waste accumulation in the water and sediment at the beaches of Thanh Hoa province.
- Proposing solutions to minimize the accumulation of plastic waste on beaches in Thanh Hoa province.

Main results

- Procedures to monitor macroplastic (>5 mm) at sandy beaches and microplastics (< 5 mm) in water (i.e., seawater and estuary water) and sediments (i.e., estuarine and beach sediments) were developed.
- The macroplastic accumulation at three beaches, including Sam Son Beach, Hai Tien Beach, and Hai Hoa Beach, has been evaluated based on quantity and density. Besides, the classification of macroplastic by types and polymer properties has been published, thereby determining the origin of waste on the beach.
- Microplastic concentrations in water and beach sediments in the Sam Son Beach, Hai Tien Beach, Hai Hoa Beach, and Cua Hoi areas were determined. Identify microplastics by size, color, and shape to determine their origin and the ecological risks they pose to aquatic environments.
- Beach cleanliness is assessed through the Clean Coast Index (CCI). Most beaches are classified as medium to dirty. In the active tourist season, the beaches have a higher CCI index than in the inactive tourist season.
- Based on the obtained results from the project, strategies to minimize pollution from macroplastics and microplastics in the sandy beach, water, and sediment in compliance with the practical conditions of the province.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- The project has developed a procedure based on Vietnam’s reality to monitor plastic waste on beaches.
- The CCI index was used for the first time to measure the cleanliness of beaches in Thanh Hoa province.
- Microplastics in Thanh Hoa province’s aquatic environment, estuarine sediments, and beaches were detected. Their characteristics, such as color, size, and shape, were used to trace back their origin to provide strategies for minimizing pollution.
