Project's information

Project's title Studying in P and S wave velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the Indochina penisula and East Vietnam sea regions – Illumining the structure of ancient subduction zones and volcanic sources
Project’s code VAST06.02/20-21
Research hosting institution Institute of Geophysics
Project leader’s name Nguyen Van Duong
Project duration 01/01/2020 - 30/06/2022
Project’s budget 600 million VND
Classify Grade B
Goal and objectives of the project
- Estimate a 3D model of P, S wave velocity and Vp/Vs ratio in Indochina and Vietnam East Sea.
- Determine the characteristics of velocity structures in the upper Mantle and their relation to the tectonic evolution in Indochina and Vietnam East Sea.
- Determine the relationship between the melting sources in the Mantle and the distribution of basalt and volcanic eruptions on the surface beneath Indochina penisula and East Vietnam Sea regions.
Main results
- Theoretical results:
+) Constructed the 3D model of seismic wave velocity in the upper mantle beneath Indochina penisula and East Vietnam Sea regions
+) Constructed the cross-sections of seismic wave propagation through tectonic units and mantle molten region, which is possibly related to volcanic activity.
- Applied results:
+) Teleseismic dataset recorded at seismic stations in Vietnam and adjacent regions.
Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

The project used seismic broadband data recorded in Vietnam and adjacent areas to determine the 3D structure of seismic wave propagation velocity in Indochina and the East Sea. These findings shed light on the dynamics of the Mantle and the origins of basaltic and volcanic activity in Indochina and the East Sea.
