Goal and objectives of the project
Determination of chemical constituents of Sarcosperma kontumense and evaluation of their cytotoxic activity.
Main results
- Theoretical results:
+ From the stems and leaves of Sarcosperma kontumense, fiftheen compounds, including thirteen triterpenes and two flavonoids, were isolated and characterized.
* Thirteen triterpenes including:
Three triterpenes (1-3) possess hexacyclic skeleton with a 13,27-cyclopropane ring, which are very rare in nature. In which, there are two new compounds as sarcokontum A (1) và sarcokontum B (2) and a known compound as 2α,3α,19α,23-tetrahydroxy-13,17-cyclours-11-en-28-oic acid (3);
Nine known ursane-type triterpenes are corosolic acid (4), ursolic acid (5), pomolic acid (6),  1β,2α,3α,19α,23-pentahydroxyurs-11-en-28-oic acid (8), rotundic acid (9), euscaphic acid (10), jacoumaric acid (11), 3-O-trans-coumaroyltormetic acid and 3-O-cis-coumaroyltormetic acid (12);
A known olean skeleton triterpene is masilinic acid (7).
Compounds 1 – 5, 7-9, and 11-12 were isolated from the genus Sarcosperma for the first time.
* Two flavonoids are (-)-epi-catechin (14) and (+)-catechin (15).
+ Compounds 1-12 were evaluated to have none cytotoxic activity in concentrations  100 µM.
+ A laboratory-scale separation diagram for 10 clean compounds has been built.
Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results
- This is the first time a study on the chemical constituents of Sarcosperma kontumense was performed. The fiftheen compounds (1 - 15) were isolated and characterized, in which compounds 1 – 5, 7-9, and 11-12 were isolated from the genus Sarcosperma for the first time.
Especialy, from the stems and leaves of Sarcosperma kontumensem, two new triterpenes possessing hexacyclic skeleton with a 13,27-cyclopropane ring, which are very rare in nature as 2α,3β,19α,23-tetrahydroxy-13,17-cyclours-11-en-28-oic acid named sarcokontum A (1) and 2α,3β,19α,23-tetrahydroxy-13,17-cycloolean-11-en-28-oic acid named sarcokontum B (2) isolated and elucidated the structures.

Recommendations

The ursane type triterpenes are the main compounds in the stem and  leaves of Sarcosperma kontumense possessing many valuable biological activities, therefore further studies on their biological activities are necessary to thoroughly evaluate their effects in medicine.
