Project's information

Project's title Research on the propagation of tides at Tien estuary to calculate and predict soil salinity in dry seasons. Detailed research on Ham Luong estuary in Ben Tre provinc
Project’s code ĐLTE00.08/21-22
Research hosting institution Institute of Applied Informatics and Mechanics
Project leader’s name Master Pham Thi Bich Thuc
Project duration 01/01/2021 - 31/12/2023
Project’s budget 600 million VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project
- Assessment of the characteristics of the workings of hydrodynamics, the mingling of freshwater from upstream with salt water at sea, and the formation of salinity structures at Tien estuary.
- Propose ways to exploit, use the water source when faced with salinization affecting the socioeconomics of Tien estuary.
Main results
Theoretical results:
- Using the data table on real water levels to prove the impact of the ocean advancing deeper in Tien estuary. Tide perimeter 170-180cm at My Thuan.
- Tidal wave speed hitting the Cho Lach – My Thuan (2005 - 2020) increased 1.74 times compared to the period (1983 - 2005)
- The times when the tides were high were less than the times when the tides were low, thus demonstrates the domination of tides in Tien estuary. The tide’s asymmetry showed a trend of lessening.
- Analysis on tidal waves M2, M4, M6 showed an upwards trend over time. Therefore proving the tidal waves were twice as fast at Ham Luong estuary than at the other two estuaries.
- Through amplification of tidal waves, determine the ratio of the tidal amplitude in land-facing position and sea-facing position.
- Water level, crest, trough on average showed an upwards trend over time.
- Salinity measurement by location and by depth showed perturbation model of strong perturbation and weak stratification. The salinity struction appeared to affect horizontally and vertically.
- The hydrodynamic simulation structure of Tien estuary area in 2021 and in the future of 2030
- Applied results :Characteristics of salinization through time and locations, diagram system, map of the current condition in 2016, 2021 and prediction for changes in 2030 with the upstream amount set at frequencies 50%, 75%, 85%, 95% and with account for climate change – water levels rising. Serving to propose solutions on how to exploit water sources for production, industries, daily life…
- Calculate the balance in the utilization of water in specific situations, show amount of time without freshwater for everyday usage in dry seasons.
- Potential to exploit freshwater along the main river over time.
Proposing a course of action to handle the typical years with salinity drought like 2016 in regards for the needs of water for daily life, production, industries…
Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results
Demonstrating that Ham Luong river’s salinity is most sentitive at Tien estuaries. The combination of models Mike 11 and Mike 3 identified the best times and locations to collect water from Tien estuary.

Recommendations

The project requires more research on the distribution of salinity by depth and the propagation of tidal waves on the main river. Determine the relationship between tides and salinity.
