Goal and objectives of the project

Establishing technological process for manufacture environmentally friendly hydrophobic kraft paper packaging to replace non-biodegradable plastic packaging

Main results
Theoretical results:
- Cellulose microfibers were prepared using two different methods: Mechanical grinding method, TEMPO oxidation using TEMPO/NaBr/NaClO oxidation system. By TEMPO oxidation method, nanocellulose has a diameter of 10-20 nm and a length of 40-60 nm. Cellulose microfibers made by mechanical methods have high purity, can be manufactured in large quantities and cheaper than chemical methods
- Research has successfully modified cellulose microfibers with silane agents APTMS and ODA to convert the hydrophilic properties of cellulose microfibers into hydrophobic properties of cellulose microfibers. When modified with APTMS, the water droplet contact angle of the cellulose microfiber coating reached 120º. Similarly, modified with ODA, the water droplet contact angle of the cellulose microfiber coating reached 106º.
- Successfully researched and produced a hydrophobic coating solution based on cellulose microfibers using PVA and starch adhesives for kraft paper. When using PVA adhesive at 0.5% content, ODA modified cellulose content is 0.15%, dipping 3 times, the contact angle reaches 102º. When using the binder as regular starch at a content of 0.8%, the ODA modified cellulose content is 1.2%, the number of dipping times is 3 times, the contact angle reaches 127º
- Preliminary assessment of the biodegradability of kraft paper under composting conditions over a period of 6 months resulted in a weight loss of 60-80%.
- After coating, kraft paper has high hydrophobic properties (> 90º), tear strength index increases from 7.58 to 10.77 mNm2/g, elongation at break increases from 1.72% to 4.71%, tensile strength decreases slightly from 25.4 Mpa to 21.07 Mpa.
- A set of basic standards (TCCS) for hydrophobic kraft paper has been developed, applicable to Kraft paper with paper weight: 150 grams/m2, Humidity: 5-7%, Hydrophobicity with water droplet contact angle > 90o. Biodegradability: 60-80% weight loss under composting conditions over a period of 6 months.
