Project's information

Project's title Identification of phytochemicals in the treatment of sarcopenia from Vietnamese medicinal plants
Project’s code QTKR01.01/21-22
Research hosting institution Institute of Marine Biochemistry (IMBC)
Coordinating unit, co-chair College of Pharmacy, Yonsei Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, Yonsei University; Korea
Project leader’s name PhD. Bui Huu Tai and Prof. PhD. Seung Hyun Kim
Project duration 01/06/2021 - 30/06/2023
Project’s budget 200 million VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project

- Isolation and identification of anti-sarcopenia constitutents from Schisandra species growing in Vietnam
- Education and strengthen the research ability of participated members
- Strengthen the scientific collaboration between Institute of Marine Biochemistry, VAST, Vietnam and College of Pharmacy, Yonsei University, Korea

Main results

- Preparation of methanol extract and screening anti-sarcopenia activity of 4 Schisandra species including S. chinensis, S. sphenanthra, S. perulata, and S. cauliflora. Based on screening results, the fruits of S. cauliflora was selected for further investigation.
- Isolation and determination of 8 compounds, including 7 dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan and 1 sesquiterpene from the fruits of Schisandra cauliflora. Two compounds were previously undescribed. One among isolated compounds, alismoxide, displayed anti-sarcopenia activity by enhencement of the proliferation of  muscle skeletal cells and increasing the formation of myotubes.
- Strengthen research ability of participated members on the isolation, structural elucidation and evaluation of anti-sarcopenia property.
- The results were published on a paper belonging SCIE indexed journal and contributed on the graduation of 3 bachelor of sciences.
- Strengthen scientific collaboration between Vietnam and Korea, VAST and NRF organizations, Insitute of Marine Biochemistry-VAST and College of Pharmacy-Yonsei University.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- This is the first study on chemical constitutents of the fruits of Schisandra cauliflora, an endemic plant of Vietnam and newly Schisandra species.
- Isolation and determination of two previously undescribed compounds.
- This is the first study in Vietnam targeting on the evaluation of anti-sarcopenia activity.
- This is the first scientific collaboration project between Institute of Marine Biochemistry and College of Pharmacy.

Recommendations

- Futher study on chemical constitutents of S. caulifora and other popular Schisandra species in Vietnam should be done to identify anti-sacopenia agents
- Keeping a strengthened scientific collaboration between Institute of Marine Biochemistry-VAST and College of Pharmacy-Yonsei University.
