Goal and objectives of the project

Synthesis of ion-exchange membrane based on polyvinyl alcohol and its application on the desalination process using CDI CDI technology.

Main results
- Theoretical results:
+ Successfully fabricating the ion exchange membranes (cation and anion) applied for the deionization process using CDI technology.
+ Successfully investigating the physicochemical and electrochemical characteristics of the ion exchange membranes applied for the deionization process using CDI technology.
+ Successfully publishing two sciencetific articles on high quality (SCIE – Q2) journal.
Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

This research contributes to the comprehension of the ion exchange membrane utilized in CDI devices, leading to the fabrication and modification of the ion exchange membranes based on a cheap and environmentally friendly polyvinyl alcohol. This will help with the improvement of the MCDI desalination devices using the efficient ion exchange membrane without relying on the imported membranes or the expensive materials.

Products of the project
- Scientific papers in referred journals (list):
+ A low-cost and eco-friendly fabrication of an MCDI-utilized PVA/SSA/GA cation exchange membrane - Green Processing and Synthesis 2022; 11:563-571.
+ The performance of MCDI: the effect of sulfosuccinic acid ratio in the PVA‑based cation exchange membrane -  Ionics (2022) 8:4369-4380.
Recommendations

More investigations should be done on the fabrication of the ion exchange membrane as well as the desalination of NaCl in order for these ion exchange membranes to be applied in real life.
