Project's information
Project's title | Study on the biodiversity and the species relationship of some soil-dwelling arthropods in Con Dao National Park for the base of development & conservation policy making |
Project’s code | VAST04.06/21-22 |
Research hosting institution | Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources |
Project leader’s name | Nguyen Thi Thu Anh |
Project duration | 01/01/2021 - 31/12/2022 |
Project’s budget | 600 million VND |
Classify | Grade B |
Goal and objectives of the project | To identify the biodiversity and speciation of several soil arthropods in Con Dao National Park for scientific basis for building development and conservation policy. |
Main results | - Theoretical results: + A total of 58 collembolan species belonging to 42 genera, 14 families, 4 orders, and 20 arthropod species of three classes: Diplopoda, Chilopoda, Arachnida were recorded in Con Dao National Park. Of which, two species were described as new to science, Otostigmus consonensis Vu et al., 2022 and Weygoldtia condao Nguyen & Phung, 2022. One species, Otostigmus sulcipes Verhoeff, 1939, was newly recorded for the centipede fauna of Vietnam. + Of three habitats (natural forest, coastal pine forest and house garden), the number of collembolan species was high in natural forest (50 species), reduced to house garden (20 species) and coastal pine forest (7 species). Some species were found in only one habitat, for example Ceratophysella denticulata; Choreutinula inermis; Hypogastrura manubrialis; Xenylla maritima… natural forest, Archisotoma vaoensis; Folsomides pseudoparvulus; Folsomina infelicia in coastal pine forest, and Thalassaphorura yodai; Sinella monoculata; Hemisotoma thermophila; Isotomodes productus in house garden. For myriapods and arachnids, the number of species was highest at the natural forest (18), reduced to coastal pine forest (13) and lowest at the house gardens (8). + Phylogenetic relationship was analyzed for representatives of three classes Chilopoda, Diplopoda và Arachnida. The results indicated examined species were all new to science, and they were distinctly different from their congeners in the mainlands in terms of both morphology and genetics. |
Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results | This is the first data on biodiversity and species relationship of arthropods in coastal islands. |

Research area | Con Dao NP will receice the report and other scientific papers which can help them to build up the policy for conservation and development. |
Recommendations | - Continuing study on diversity and endemism of arthropods in Con Dao NP; and describe and publish all sp morphological species. - Propaganding and educating local people to protect environment and wildlife. Microarthropods can be used as bioindicator to assess soil environment, which can help to find a good policy for conservation and sustainable use of soil resource. |
