Goal and objectives of the project

The project focuses on synthesis and studying the properties of rare earth free hard magnetic materials MnFeAlC, including the following two main objectives:
(i) Synthesis of high purity -MnFeAlC magnetic phase by low-energy mechanical milling method and study the influence of Fe on material structure and magnetic properties as well as magnetic interaction between Fe and Mn in -MnFeAlC materials;
(ii) Improve individual research capacity and build a team to research magnetic materials at University of Science and Technology of Ha Noi.

Main results

Theoretical results:
- The project has carried out the synthesis of the MnAlC magnetic material with doping Fe concentration up to 4 at.%. The results show that Fe doping has a great influence on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of the material. Specifically, the iron atoms were well integrated into the lattice of the MnAlC magnetic phase causing the unit cell parameters to decrease. Through the study of differential scanning calorimetry, Fe doping also leads to an increase in the phase transition temperature from the  parent phase to the  magnetic phase, which means that Fe doping led to an increase in thermal stability of the MnAlC magnetic phase. In terms of magnetic properties, iron doping did not lead to an increase in saturation magnetism, whereas coercivity did not have a  significant change.
- From the results of the magnetometric measurements, the experiments followed up with Mossbauer spectrometry to investigate the magnetic interactions between Fe and Mn atoms in the MnAlC lattice to learn about the causes and effects of Fe on the magnetic properties of materials. The results show that the Fe atom has formed a non-collinear magnetic interaction with the Mn atoms, which means that the magnetic moments of the Fe atom form inclined canting angles with the magnetic moments of Mn with magnitude depends on the position of Fe in the lattice of MnAlC.
