Goal and objectives of the project
Development of two target screening methods for 1500 organic micro-pollutants in suspended particulate matter (SPM) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and application to air in Hanoi ultilizing automated identification and quantification systems with an GC/MS and LCQ/TOF/MS database (AIQS-DB), and application fo developed methods for screening analysis of 1500 organic micro-poluttants in SPM and PM2.5 in urban area of Hanoi city. The project also strengthens international cooperation in scientific research between the two countries (Vietnam and Japan), especially with 2 famous universities with a long history of environmental pollution research in Japan: The University of Kitakyushu and Ehime University
Main results

The reserch results obtained of the research:
- Japanese side have already developed of two target screening methods for 1500 organic micro-pollutants in suspended particulate matter (SPM) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) using automated identification and quantification systems with an GC/MS/MS and LCQ/TOF/MS database (AIQS-DB). Vietnamese side have sussecfuly applied these method for screening OMPs in particulate matters in atmospheric environment in urban area of Hanoi city.
- The analytical results of OMPs in particulate matters in urban area of Hanoi city showed that: Nine PPCPs, 19 insecticides, 16 fungicides, 6 herbicides and 6 other compounds out of a total of 491 OMPs registered in LCQ/TOF/MS database were detected; while 118 OMPs (including pesticides, phthalate esters, endocrine disrupting compounds, PPCPs, sterols) were detected using GC/MS/MS database. Some pesticides and PAHs, which were detected at low concentration, were analyzed using GC/MS/MS with SIM mode. A total of 17 PAHs and 18 pesticides were detected in all analyzed samples.
Recommendations: Some OMPs substances that are harmful to human health such as chlorpyrifos, fenobucarb, DEHP, BPA, 4-NP, and phenol and some pesticides which are recently used in Vietnam however prohibited in Europe (chlorpyrifos, permethrin, deltamethrin, cypermethrin, carbofuran) were detected in particulate matters in Vietnam. Therefore, it is needed to conduct in-depth study on these substances in atmospheric environment in Vietnam.
Education, tranining and cooperation:
This cooperation study supported 2 masters and 1 PhD student, who have already got the degrees. Also, young researchers in Vietnam had the opportunity to access advanced chemical analysis technology using modern analytical equipment. Also, young Vietnamese researchers will be trained in analytical techniques, skills in finding and solving air pollution problems in Vietnam under the guidance of Japanese experts.  Through this project, young researchers from both sides can assess the risk of hazardous substances to the air environment, then find out the causes and sources of the pollution as well as propose effective remedial measures to reduce the risks to human health and the environment.
The success this project is the fundamental basis for further research cooperation between the researcher of IET - VAST and experts of The University of Kitakyushu and Ehime University, Japan in the field of environmental pollution, especially the air environment in Vietnam.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

This is the first study on a thousand OMPs in atmospheric particular in Vietnam ultilizing automated identification and quantification systems with an GC/MS and LCQ/TOF/MS database (AIQS-DB). Many OMP was first detected in atmospheric particular in Vietnam such as 16 insecticides, 19 herbicides and fungicides and 06 PPCPs. Some detected chemicals are toxic and harmful to human such as chlorpyrifos, fenobucarb, DEHP, BPA, 4-NP, phenol and some pesticides, which is needed to carried out in-depth study on the occurence of these chemicals in the air environment in the future.
