Goal and objectives of the project

Whole genome decoding of porcine circovirus causing stunting syndrome in piglets in Vietnam.

Main results

Theoretical results:

-The study has received 30 positive PCV2 samples in 12 provinces and cities of Vietnam. The nucleotide sequence and phylogenetic analyses of porcine circovirus ORF2 (Cap protein) from 17 virulent strains and 4 commercial vaccine strains then were conducted. The analyses revealed that all of PCV samples in Vietnam are of type 2, of which the most common is the PCV2d  (64.7%), followed by the PCV2b (29.4%), only one specimen PCV2a (5.9%) was collected. The vaccine strains currently used in Vietnam belong to the PCV2h (which also known as recombinant cluster). These strains were deposited in GenBank.
- The whole genome sequence of 11 PCV2 virulent strains and 4 commercial vaccine strains were decoded, phylogenetic analysed, molecular characterised and deposited in Genbank. Five representing strains have been selected for vaccine production in the future.
- Gene Cap (ORF2) of 15 PCV2 strains were kept in cloning vector.

Applied results: The clinical samples which have been analysed is a valuable genetic source for future vaccine investigation. The data obtained from the project is a reliable reference for vaccination program in Vietnam.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- To be the first publish of PCV2d genotype in Northern Vietnam.
- To be the first study about genome sequencing and molecular analyses of commercial vaccince strains in Vietnam
