Main results

Science:
- Developed a new method for the rehabilitation monitoring of mangroves using a combination of optical satellite images and radar satellite images.
Application:
- For the rehabilitation monitoring of mangrove cover status, we used the Landsat satellite imagery series in the 48 year (1972-2020) to analyse the land cover change, and the results showed that the coverage of the mangroves in this study area has gradually increased over the years: 9.54% in 1972, 34.46% in 1988, 46.34% in 1995, 51.76% in 2000, 54.27% in 2005, 56.93% in 2010, 59.91% in 2015 and 63.70% in 2020. with the result that the accuracy after classification using satellite images is over 85%. The research also built 05 maps of mangrove forest changes in Can Gio district over the period as 1995-2000, 2000-2005, 2005-2010, 2010-2015 and 2015-2020 at the scale of 1:50,000.
- For assessment of mangrove structure using a combination of optical and radar satellite images, we used a combination of images taken from ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 and Landsat satellites to build models that detect the structural parameters of mangrove forests. These models can explain mangrove structural parameters such as the basal area of 91% (R2 = 0.91), the height of 60% (R2 = 0.60), the density of 52% (R2 = 0.52) and the biomass of 91% (R2 = 0.91). This study aims to provide results to study area for better management, monitoring, conservation as well as sustainable development of mangrove forests.

- Product 1: Method of using a combination of optical and radar satellite images in rehabilitation monitoring of mangrove in the study area. Scientific and technical criteria: Developed a new method for the rehabilitation monitoring of mangroves using a combination of optical satellite images and radar satellite images.
- Product 2: Dataset of models for estimating forest structural parameters such as density, diameter, height, and mangrove biomass. Scientific and technical criteria: A complete set of data on models (single variate, multivariate and combined) in the study of mangrove structure.
- Product 3: Map of changes in mangroves at the scale of 1:50,000 of the study area through the time points 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020. Scientific and technical criteria: Map of mangrove changes at 1:50,000 scale.
