Goal and objectives of the project

Research on chemical compositions and evaluation of biological activity of the fruits of Phyllanthus emblica (PE) for application in liver diseases treatment.

Main results

Technological results:
- A process to extract PE product at scale 3 kg raw material/batch was developed. This product was not toxic to experimental animals and can be further applied for preparation of medicinal formulations with antioxidant and liver protective properties.
Theoretical results:
- The extract from the fruits of Phyllanthus emblica possessed antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities against DPPH and MDA in vitro.
- From the extract of Phyllanthus emblica fruits, 5 compounds including: acid gallic, methyl gallate, quercetin, kaemferol, and kaempferol 3-O-glucopyranoside were isolated and structural elucidated.
- The hepatoprotective activities of the PE fruit extracts was evaluated in BALB/c mice induced liver damage by oral application of CCl4. The results indicated that the PE extract at the dose 500mg/kg P exhibited remarkable hepatoprotective effect similarly to that of silymarin (the positive control) at the dose of 50 mg/kgP.
- Study of the acute toxicity of PE fruit extract in mice model showed that this PE product was not toxic.
Applied results:
- The process of extracting PE product at scale 3 kg raw material / batch was applied to obtain 110 g / batch. Totally, three batches were processed to yield 330 g of PE product.
- Institutional standards (basic standards) for the product PE were build-up. This product can be further used for preparation of medicinal formulations for antioxidant and liver protective application.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- The PE extract from the fruits of Phyllanthus embica at the dose of 500 g/kg P/ day showed hepatoprotective effect by decreasing serum AST and ALT levels, MDA, LDH, cholesterol, bilirubin levels and partly reducing the liver injury in BALB/c mice induced hepatotoxicity by oral administration of liver highly-toxic CCl4.
- A process to extract PE product at scale 3 kg raw material/batch was developed.
- Institutional standards (basic standards) to extract the PE product (rich of polyphenol and gallic acid) from the fruits of Phyllanthus emblica were build-up
The project announced a technological process for successful extraction of PE fruit with antioxidant and liver-protective effects. This is the scientific basis for the development of health protection products from Phyllanthus emblica from Vietnam.
