Goal and objectives of the project

General: Application of remote sensing technology in marine vegetation research. Specific subjects of study in this task are seagrass and seaweed. The study area is the coastal waters of the islands of Phu Quy, Tho Chu and Nam Du.
Detail:
• Collect data on marine vegetation in Phu Quy, Tho Chu and Nam Du islands
• Research and establish scientific basis and method of remote sensing image interpretation to determine the distribution of marine vegetation. Strengthening international cooperation with Russian partners.

Main results

In term of Science
- Our research has demonstrated the possibility of using remote sensing in marine research in general and in seagrass in particular.
- We have succeeded in selecting a method, building and developing a water layer effect elimination algorithm to determine the bottom spectral reflectance of shallow and coastal areas by combination between remote sensing image data and in-situ data with spectrometer equipment.
- The study also identified a effective method to use remote sensing images to determine seagrass distribution in the study area.
In term of applicable products
- The coastal field survey data set in Phu Quy island can be used for other studies
- The software can eliminate the effect of the water on the bottom reflectance was developed to run on an open source platform that can be widely used in research in shallow and coastal areas.
- Seagrass distribution maps can be used for investigation, planning and territorial management of the study area, although further improvement is needed.
