Project's information

Project's title Structural study of seaweed polysaccharides for food, agriculture, and pharmaceutical applications
Project’s code QTJP01.01/18-20
Research hosting institution Institute of Chemistry
Coordinating unit, co-chair JSPS-Japan
Project leader’s name Assoc.Prof. Thanh Thi Thu Thuy
Project duration 01/01/2018 - 31/12/2021
Project’s budget 300 million VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project

- Determination of the structural composition of polysaccharides extracted from marine algae for application orientation
- Strengthening international cooperation and training Vietnamese researchers.

Main results

- Collected and identified three seaweed species that belong brown, red, and green seaweeds.
- Extracted polysaccharides from the collected seaweeds including alginate, oligoalginate, sulfated galactan, ulvan, and xyloglucan.
- Determined the structure of alginate and its fractions from brown seaweed Tubinaria ornata, and evaluated their bioactivity. The results indicated that alginate is a co-polymer with a linear chain structure made up of polyG, polyM, and polyMG blocks, with the ratio M/G = 1.06, in which two main block components were polyM and polyG.  The results showed that the native alginate was not highly bioactive, but its two main components showed more significal activity, especially polyM block. It confirmed the great influence of structure on biological activity. The result contributed to the orientation of using alginate in pharmaceutical field.
- Extracted a sulfated galactan from red seaweed Gracilaria heteroclada. The structural characteristics, gel properties, and antioxidant activity of this polysaccharide have been studied.
- Isolated ulvan and xyloglucan from green seaweed Enteromorpha torta and the complexation between ulva and protein was studied for pharmaceutical applications.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- Using SAXS method to study the conformational structure of alginate and its fractions from brown seaweed Tubinaria ornata.
- Studied the structural characteristics, gel properties, and antioxidant activity of  polysaccharides from red seaweed Gracilaria heteroclada.
- Isolated two structural forms of ulvan and xyloglucan from green seaweed Enteromorpha torta and studied the complexation between ulvan and protein.
