Goal and objectives of the project

Building an information system for monitoring and managing the marine environment using remote sensing technology combined with oceanographic data
Detail goals:
- Developing tools for monitoring and managing the marine environment for prevention and mitigation of harmful effects of marine environmental incidents and for a sustainable marine economic development;
- Synchronizing and systematizing oceanographic data sources from satellite images and other databases for monitoring and management of the marine environment; building an oceanographic database for the marine areas from Khanh Hoa to Ca Mau;
- Creating a user-friendly tool for managers and end users to quickly provide information on monitoring and management of the marine environment in order to prevent and minimize the harmful effects of environmental incidents, serving the development of a sustainable marine economy.

Main results

Theoretical results:
- Database of marine environmental factors based on remote sensing images and data collected from other methods, being a dynamic database system, continuously and easily updating marine environmental factors based on remote sensing images, other databases and survey data. This database is stored on a server, complying with the ArcGIS Geodatabase standard.
- Proposing a procedure for quick warning of marine environmental incidents: oil spills, algae blooms, deterioration of coastal water quality, and erosion/sedimentation; these 4 quick warning processes can be integrated on Windows and Web environments.
- Report on the process of exploiting marine environmental data from remote sensing and oceanographic data sources; the report evaluates the ability and efficiency of marine remote sensing data on environmental factors, ensuring data reliability and continuity.
- WebGIS on monitoring and management of marine environment in the study area; a Report on building a WebGIS system for early warnings of environmental problems, including algorithms for building warning procedures.
- Workshop and training materials.
- Project Final report.
Applied results:
- Customized Database management system on marine environmental factors; a WebGIS that provides timely necessary information for managers and end users with a standard Web interface; the system interacts with users according to a predetermined hierarchy.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

The main contributions of the Project can be summarized in its proposal for a procedure for quick warning of marine environmental incidents: oil spills, algae blooms, deterioration of coastal water quality, and erosion/sedimentation; this proposal has been realized in a WebGIS package for monitoring and management of marine environment in the study area, together with the associated database relating to marine environment that help managers and end users in early warnings of marine environmental incidents.
