Project’s code BSTMV.22/15-19
Research hosting institution Institute of Oceanography
Project leader’s name Dr. Hoang Xuan Ben
Project duration 01/01/2015 - 31/12/2020
Project’s budget 12.577.243.000 VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project

- The obtainable samples about 50% of the total number of marine species in the South of Vietnam for exhibition and scientific research to conform to standards of Vietnam National Museum of Nature.
- To improve the research capacity of the host institution and natural acknowledgment of community:
+ The contribution to complete the collection of marine organisms belonging to national specimens collection on Vietnam's nature
+ The taxonomy skills increase in marine organisms to support the studying of marine biodiversity for conservation, sustainable exploitation of resources and communication education on the marine environment.

Main results

In the period 2015 - 2020, A total of 20,101 specimens with 2,626 exhibition and 17,475 scientific research samples of 2,179 species were collected including plankton, marine plants, invertebrates and vertebrates groups; The annually results of projects achieved in comparison with the plan approved each year.
After 6 years of implementation (phase 1), the sample collection obtained 39% in comparison with the overall project, of which samples for exhibition and scientific research samples are 43.0% and 38,5%, respectively. All information of specimen was entered into the database of the project.
There are 2,167 species were identified from more than 20,000 specimens were collected belonging to marine plants, plankton, invertebrates and vertebrates, accounting for about 20% of the total number of known species in Vietnam's waters. Besides, over 360 samples were collected in the Spratly and Paracel waters to contribute to Vietnam's sovereignty these archipelagos.
The project contributed to building the taxonomical capacity (especially, the groups which lack the experts in the field of classification) and training young scientists to step by step approach and replace the previous scientist. Also, the capacity of scientists for preparation, exhibition design and specimen management significantly improved in recent years.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

The project's collection of marine organisms in Southern Vietnam (period 2015 – 2020) not only contributed to the marine collection samples in Vietnam but also complete the national specimens collection on Vietnam's nature.
The results of the project improved the skills of the Institute of Oceanography's biological experts in taxonomical research, especially young scientists.
