Goal and objectives of the project

- Modelling the normal magnetic field (TTBT) in the two epochs 2007.0 and 2015.0; the Geomagnetic secular variation (BTTK) and geomagnetic anomaly in Vietnam and adjacent area.
- Quantitative assessment of the magnetic field effect caused by the equatorial current (EEJ); calculation of the EEJ current density;
- Modelling the EEJ according to the longitude, latitude and local time.

Main results

Theoretical results:
+ Collected the magnetic field data from CHAMP satellites (from 2002 - 2007), Swarm (A, B, C) (from 2013 - 2017) and from Phu Thuy, Da Lat, Bac Lieu for period 2002-2017.
+ Modelling the normal magnetic field (TTBT) in the two epochs 2007.0 and 2015.0; the Geomagnetic secular variation (BTTK) and geomagnetic anomaly in Vietnam and adjacent area.
+ Calculated the current density of EEJ from the CHAMP satellite data and the ground data for the period 2002-2007.
Applied results:
+ Provide the model of the normal magnetic field in the two epochs 2007.0 and 2015.0; the secular variation and geomagnetic anomaly in Vietnam and adjacent area for scientific research or socio-economic development.
+ Quantitative assessment of some basic parameters of the EEJ current system to be able to consider the effects of this current system on measurements and monitoring of electromagnetic fields in the equatorial area (such as when conducting repeated stations geomagnetic, magnetotelluarics, GPS position ...).
+ The results of the reseach are used in scientific research as well as economic development, serving national security and defense of the country. The results of the topic have been published in prestigious domestic as well as foreign journals will mark the contributions of Vietnamese scientists in the world.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- For the first time in Vietnam, researched and successfully applied the spherical cap harmonic analysis method to calculate the normal magnetic field, secular variation and geomagnetic anomaly for Vietnam and neighboring areas when using geomagtic data obtained on satellites.
- The research  has used a long series of data (up to 6 years), complete and synchronous in time between satellite data and geomagnetic stations data to study the EEJ.
- Develop a method to separate the magnetic field caused by EEJ by polynomials with different order without using fixed order from CHAMP satellite data and study the basic characteristics of EEJ as well as the variations of it globally.

Recommendations

Proposing the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the Institute of Geophysics continue to provide funding for the project team to continue the following studies:
- Research and explain the existence of the extreme peak of EEJ in the longitude through Vietnam.
- Apply the SCHA method to combination of data, as data of geomagnetic stations, data of repeat station, geomagnetic data from air, sea ... to improve the reliability of the normal magnetic field model.
- Continue to study Equatorial Electrojet currents from Swarm satellite data.
