Project's information

Project's title Study on probiotic production for environmental treatment of snakeskin gourami fish (Trichogaster pectoralis, Regan 1909) farming areas towards sustainable development and food safety and hygiene in Dong Thap province
Project’s code UDNGDP. 02/18-19
Research hosting institution Institute of Tropical Biology
Coordinating unit, co-chair People’s Committee of Dong Thap Province
Project leader’s name Dr. Le Thi Anh Hong
Project duration 01/05/2018 - 30/11/2020
Project’s budget 967 028 118 VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project

To produce probiotic for fish pond water treatment and antimicrobial products for controling black-body disease and hemorrhagic disease on snakeskin gourami fish (Trichogaster pectoralis) to reduce the use of chemicals and antibiotics in the farming process, reducing cultural costs and ensure good quality commercial fish.

Main results

- Theoretical results:

  • Selected of isolated bacteria from Dong Thap province that able to use for producing probiotic for snakeskin gourami fish pond water treatment and antimicrobial products for controling dark – body and hemorrhagic diseases on snakeskin gourami fish.
  • Isolated of Streptococcus agalactiae and Klebsiella pneumoniae  and determined they are causative agents of dark – body and hemorrhagic diseases on snakeskin gourami fish.
  • Contributed in traing 2 Masters in Biotechnology.

- Applied results: Compled of three production processes of probiotics with selected bacterial sources in Dong Thap province that can be proactively source and control the quality of the products. Using these products in the farming process will reduce the amount of chemicals and antibiotics, and reduce production costs.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results
  • Bacterial strains isolated and selected from samples collected in Dong Thap can be used to produce specific probiotics for fish pond water treatment and control the black-body and hemorrhagic diseases on snakeskin gourami fish;
  • Isolated Streptococcus agalactiae and Klebsiella pneumoniae and determined they are one of the causes of black body and hemorrhagic diseases as the basis for further research for the control of these two diseases on snakeskin gourami fish.
  • Established three production processes of probiotics within selected local bacteria sources in Dong Thap to help proactively source and control the quality of products, especially the microbial products for prevention / resistance to black-body and hemorrhagic diseases on snakeskin gourami fish has not available on the market.

- Patents (list): None
- Technological products (describe in details: technical characteristics, place):

  • The baterial strains used in the production of probiotic for the treatment of fish pond water are included: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (amylase biosynthesis), Bacillus siamensis (protease biosynthesis), Bacillus pumilus (lipase biosynthesis), Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (cellulase biosynthesis), Bacillus megaterium (ammonium oxidation), Pseudomonas stutzeri (nitrite oxidation);
  • Bacterial strains used in produce probiotics to control black-body and hemorrhagic diseases on snakeskin gourami fish are included: Bacillus subtilis (inhibiting Streptococcus agalactiae  causing black - body disease) and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (inhibiting Klebsiella pneumoniae causing hemorrhage disease);
  • Two strains of bacteria that cause black-body disease and hemorrhagic disease in Snakeskin gourami fish are: Streptococcus agalactiae and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

All bacterial strains are being stored at the laboratoly of Department of Bioconversion Technology, Institute of Tropical Biotechnology and will be transferred to Dong Thap Verification and Testing Center.

- Other products (if applicable):

  • Production Process of probiotic for fish pond water treatment in the lab scale (5 liters / day);
  • Production process of probiotic for controling black-body disease on snakeskin gourami  fish in lab scale (5 liters / day);
  • Production process of probiotic for controling hemorrhagic disease on snakeskin gourami  fish in lab scale (5 liters / day);
Research area

Dong Thap Verification and Testing Center.

Recommendations

To continue studying on large scales and proposing to follow the project results, developing into a production project to produce  2 probiotics which are used  for pond water treatment and control on the black - body and  hemorrhage diseases on snakeskin gourami (Trichogaster pectoralis) fish.
