Research hosting institution Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics
Coordinating unit, co-chair Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland
Project leader’s name Dr. Phan Dong Pha
Project duration 01/01/2018 - 30/06/2020
Project’s budget 200 million VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project

- Clarify the structural characteristics of the Central Red River basin area according to geology-geophysical data;
- Specify the characteristics of the coal-bearing sediment in the Central Red River basin area in comparision with the Tertiary basins of the Cao Bang- Tien Yen Fault Zone;
- Strengthen the scientific bi-collaboration between IMGG and IGS PAS; Inhale the capabilities of geolo-geophysical data analyses and interpretation for the junior researchers at IMGG.

Main results

- Scientific results:
+ Defined the coal-bearing sediment layers in Central Red River basin area;
+ Steady progressed in seismic data processing and interpretation as well as facies analysis of coal-bearing sediment;
+ Specified the characteristics of the coal-bearing sediment in Central Red River basin area in comparison with the Tertiary basins of the Cao Bang- Tien Yen Fault Zone in the scope of stratigraphy, lithofacies, paleo-environment/ paleoclimate and structure basins.
- Application results:
The Project’s studied results could be applied for coal-bearing exploration/investigation in Red River Delta as well as other similar regions in Vietnam.
- Education results:
By actually participated in the Project’s certain tasts, the skills of seismic data processing/interpretation as well as sedimentary facies analising have been steady upgraded, especially for the junior scientists of IMGG.
- Internation colaboration results:
The Project archivements have participated in strenthenning and developing the bi-colaboration between the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics (Vietnam Academy of Sciences and Technology- VAST) and the Institute of Geology Sciense (Poland Academy of Sciences- PAS) in the fields of geology- geophysics.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- The Project’s results are novel, contributive for clarification of geological structures and manners of coal-bearing sediment layers on the geolo-geophysical cross sections in the Central Red River basin.
- The new and advantage technics/methodologies have been initially applied in order to inhale the 2D seismic data for better specification of geological elements such as faults, folds, layer strutures, coal beds, sediment sequences...

Research area

The Project’s results could be directly applied for geolo-geophygical (in general) and seismic (in particular) data processing/interpreting at the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics

Recommendations

- The application of geolo-geophysics complexes in exploration/investigation of brown coal as well as the coal-bearing basin structures is one of the bi-colaboration target between IMGG and IGS, which could be long-term develop in the future. Therefore, it should be supported furthermore.
- This bi-colaboration approach needs to be developed into multi-colaboration for better opptunities of education and research.
