Goal and objectives of the project

DUONG THI THUY The aims of this project were to synthesis nanoparticles and test the ability of algal inhibition of synthesized nanoparticles. Approaches are needed to apply synthesized nanoparticles in bloom-forming control in freshwaters.

Main results

Theoretical results
- 5 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized (nano silvers synthesized using chemical reduction and electrochemical methods; nano coppers synthesized using chemical reduction and polyol methods and nano TiO2 synthesized using sol-gel method). We investigated the inhibition potential of synthesized nanoparticles on the growth of cyanobacteria.
- Effects of silver and copper nanopartiles on growth of strains M.aeruginosa and C.vulgaris were investigated using optical density measurement, chlorophyll a, cell density and EC50 analysis).
- From 5 synthesized nanoparticles, we have indentified 3 nanoparticles (nano silvers synthesized using chemical reduction and electrochemical methods and nano coppers synthesized using chemical reduction) that are able to inhibit the growth of cyanobacteria strain M.aeruginosa.
- We demonstrate an effective, selective algicidal effect of copper nanoparticles on Cyanobactrial strain M. aeruginosa, compared to green algae strain C. vulgaris.
- Establishment of a laboratory-scale for nanoparticles synthesis and their application in bloom-forming cyanobacteria control.
Applied results
- The present study also suggests that copper nanoparticles were selective and effective for the control cyanobacteria bloom. Thus, copper nanoparticles have great promise as an anti-algal agent and it has a great potential for use in controlling bloom-forming cyanobacteria in freshwaters.
