Goal and objectives of the project

- To assess the current sittuation and the causes of land degradation and desertification, and their impacts on socio-economic development;
- To propose the general measurements and land use demonstrations in order to prevent land degradation and desertification for sustainable development of the Central Highlands region;
- To establish database of land resources and soil environment for management and warming of land degradation and desertification in the Cental Highlands.

Main results

a) Theoretical results:
+ Clarifying the situation of land resources (quanlity and quality); the current land use status and land suitability levels for some major crops in the Central Highlands;
+ Analysing and clarifying the the situation, the causes land degradation and desertification in the Central Highlands at scale of 1:250.000 and in each the province at scale of 1:100.000 based on general geographic viewpoint;
+ Establishment of potential land degradation map, land degradation status map; synthetic land degradation map and desertification map for the Cental Highlands region at scale of 1:250.000 and each province at scale of 1:100.000;
+ Warming of the rising trend of the processes of land degradation and desertification in the Central Highlands region under impacts of climate change and the pressure of population growth, and land use planning of the provinces until 2020;
+ Proposal of the general measurements in order to manage and restore degraded land for sustainable development of the Central Highlands region, in which the are some land use demonstration models for the central and local levels;
+ Development of the completed GIS database of land resources and soil environment of the Central Highland region scale of 1: 250.000 and the provincial level at scale of 1:100.000 using ArcGIS software. These database meets the requirements of easily updating and exploitation for management and rational use of land resources and protection the environment.
b) Applied results:
The project results can be used as a input for land use planning and sustainable use of land in order that prevent land degradation and desertification.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

+ Clarifying the status of land resources; the status and increased risk of land degradation and desertification in the Central Highlands region; and proposal of the overall solutions for rational use of land resources in the context of the impact of climate change and increasing demand of land use.
+ Contribute to improve methodology of land degradation and desertification assessment under the general geographic perspective for management and rational use of land resources;
+ Contribute to perform the responsibilities of Vietnam joining the Convention to Combat Desertification United Nations.
