Project's information

Project's title Investigation of bioactive compounds from mangrove plants collected in Xuan Thuy National Park in Nam Dinh province
Research hosting institution Institute of Marine Biochemistry (IMBC)
Project leader’s name Dr. Nguyen Van Thanh
Project duration 01/01/2013 - 01/01/2014
Project’s budget 1.200.000.000 VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project

a. Having mangrove samples with medicinal potential collected in some areas of the Xuan Thuy National Park.
b. Having bioative compounds obtained from antimicrobial and cytotoxic assay guided isolation.
c. Introduction to the use of some promising mangrove plants.

Main results

- Theoretical results:
- Investigated and collected 28 mangrove plant samples with the scientific names and specimens.
- The crude extracts and fractions of the mangrove plants were screened for their antimicrobial (8 strains) and cytotoxic (against 5 cancer cell lines) activities.
- 77 compounds (including one new cycloartane glucoside, rhizostyloside, from Rhizophora stylosa) were isolated from 5 mangrove plants by using various chromatographic methods. Their chemical structures were elucidated by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, HSQC, HMBC, COSY, NOESY, and HR-ESI mass spectra.
- The isolated compounds were tested for their antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. From the obtained data, 44 compounds were found to be active.
- Having analyzed the presence of bioactive compounds in 5 mangrove plant samples and having quantified content of these compounds in original plant samples.
- Applied results:
- Introduction to the use of the two promising mangrove plants: Lumnitzera racemoca and Rhizophora stylosa.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- This is the first studies on the chemical composition and bioactivity of 5 mangrove plants collected in Xuan Thuy National Park in Nam Dinh province. - A new compound was isolated from mangrove plant Rhizophora stylosa.
- 44 bioactive compounds were found from 5 Vietnamese mangrove species.
