Goal and objectives of the project

Determination of biomass and carbon accumulation capability of plant communities at Me Linh biodiversity station and its surroundings

Main results

Theoretical results:
+ Eight plots (50x50m) were built in 8 plant communities at the station for long- term studies
+ The structural characteristics, the species composition of plant communities were studied at the station.
+ Biomass was estimated for 20 wood and bamboo species at the station.
+ The total biomass and the carbon stock of plants were determined in 11 plant communities.
+ The amount of falling productivity and the decomposition of that were determined in 9 plant communities at the station.
+ The CO2 emissions in the process of soil respiration were estimated in 9 plant communities at the station.
+ The carbon stock in soils were determined in 11 plant communities at the station.
+ The ability to accumulate carbon and converted into CO2 by 11 plant communities was identified at the station.
+ for the development and implementation of restoration projects of natural forests were proposed under the Clean Development Mechanism CDM

Applied results:
+ The system of plots that built by the project will be the basis for long-term studies on ecological processes (biome) and the change of biodiversity under climate change at the station.
+ The results of the study on carbon accumulation in the plant communities will contribute to clarify the possibility and importance of forest ecosystems in reducing carbon emissions, one of the factors in minimizing of the adverse effects of climate change.
+ The results of the study will form the basis of scientific and practical for developing and implementing restoration projects domestic natural forests under the Clean Development Mechanism CDM

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- The first time provides data on total biomass and biomass of each component of the individual tree for 20 wood species and one bamboo one growing at Me Linh biodiversity station.
-The first time studied and provide data on biomass, carbon stock, soil respiration intensity in 11 plant communities at Me Linh biodiversity station.
