Project's title Investigation and evaluation of the harmful effects of parasites in some economic fish species in the coastal of Northern Vietnam
Research hosting institution Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources
Project leader’s name Nguyen Van Ha
Project duration 01/01/2013 - 01/01/2016
Project’s budget 1,800 milions VND
Classify Excellent
Goal and objectives of the project

Investigate, identify parasites causes disease in some economic marine fishes in the coastal from Quang Ninh Province to Quang Binh Province. Assess the role of pathogens and the harmful of parasites to the marine fishes.

Main results

- Theoretical results:
+ Found 200 parasite species from economic fish species in coastal North Vietnam belong to 123 genus, 63 families, 21 orders, 12 classes and 6 phylums, including: Protozoa - 18 species; Cestoda – 7 species; Monogenea - 62 species; Trematoda - 42 species; Nematoda - 27 species; Acanthocephala – 12 species and Crustacae – 32 species.
+ Four new species have been reported: Metahaliotrema similis n. sp.; M. ypsilocleithrum n. sp.; Loxuroides pricei n. sp. and Paucivitellosus vietnamensis n. sp.
- Applied results: Identified the dangerous parasite species that caused disease in coastal North Vietnam and the potential risk of affecting the coastal fishery.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- Discovered and published four parasite species new to science, many parasite species added to the fauna of marine parasites in Vietnam;
- Provides morphology data of some parasite species and genetics of 5 parasitic trematodes (registered on GenBank) in marine fish;
