Main results

-  Scientific results:
+ Established 23 extreme floods that occurred during Holocene in the study area, the age of the floods are identified with different methods, corresponding to the years from young to old: 2009, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1925, 1875, 1785, 1735, 1687, 1641, 1546, 1499, 1450, 1355, 1306, 1221, 1119 and 1065.
+ The frequency of occurrence of extreme floods, according to the different intensities of different frequencies, including cyclical floods 12 years, periodic floods of 40-50 years, and the flood has signed 120 year cycle.
+ The extreme floods in the region takes place with the highest flood elevation up to 527m upstream and downstream 512 compared to sea level, which is only 1/3 of Kon Tum City is not flooding can cause damage of up to hundreds of billions of forecasting and scenario planning-oriented social and economic development and affect the safety of the dam system.
- Applied results:
+ Proposal a scientific basis for the prevention of damage to the Kon Tum region due to flooding hazards.
+ The results of the research will contribute significantly to the management and operation of the reservoir system in the river basin.
+ Orientation or adjust the economic development plan of Kon Tum province society taking into account the extreme flooding risk in study area.

Products of the project

- Articles published on scientific journals:
+ A multi-proxy record of paleoflood events imprinted on oxbow lake sedimentary sequences of the Đắk Bla River, Kontum, Vietnam. PACLIM conf. in US
+ Catastrophic flash flood and tropical storms: A 140- yr sedimentary record from the Đắk Bla river, Kon Tum province, VietNam. in CATENA Journal
+ Reconstruction paleoclimate of Central Highland based on Fokenia Hodisii in KonPlong district- upstream of DakBla River. Environmental and Resources Magazin in VietNam No2, 8/2015.
+ Research of paleoflood based on sedimentary in oxbow lake, Kon Tum province, Vietnam Geological journal, No 354, 11-12/2015.
- The specific products (product description) stored at The office of the key state-level program of “Science and technology for socio economic development in the Central Highlands of Vietnam”:
+ Explanatory report accompanying the map of extreme floods during the Holocene, the scale of 1 / 100,000.
+ The report notes, diagrams forecast scenario shows flooding extent and flood affected areas extremes occur on the basis of the highest floods.
+ Report calculation results of socio-economic damage in the tributaries (Po Ko and Dak Bla) of the Se San River Basin occurs when extreme floods.
+ A report on the measures to prevent and minimize damage.

Research region

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results:
The methodology and the methodology of the subject can be applied extensively to the long-term forecast extreme floods (flood history) for other basins in the country.
