Project's information

Project's title Study on taxonomy, distribution and chemical components of the natural Panax species in Lai Chau Province, Vietnam
Research hosting institution Vietnam National Museum of Nature
Project leader’s name Dr. Phan Ke Long
Project duration 01/01/2012 - 01/01/2013
Project’s budget 500 million Vietnam dongs
Classify Fair
Goal and objectives of the project

- Determine the scientific name and habitats of the natural Panax species in Lai Chau provine.
- Determine the main chemical compounnents of the natural Panax species in Lai Chau provine.

Main results

- Theoretical results:
Habitat of Laichau’s Panax was identified. According that, they grow under the canopy of primary forest, jungle, broadleaf trees, monsoon raining, tropical evergreen forest where boundary between low and medium mountain, on the A1 ground of weathering Humic Acrisols (Acu) soil, on the silicate rocks and shale, rich humus and nutrients, with the tropical monsoon climate mountains, summer rain, no pronounced dry period, but there are at least 5 months of cold.
Laichau ginseng have distributed on Pu Si Lung mountain chain and neighbouring (Muong Te and West of Sin Ho, near China border) and Pu Sam Cap mountain chain where between Sin Ho, Tam Duong districts and Lai Chau city.
Laichau ginseng is currently threatened with extinction in severity (CR) under the terms A2A, c, d; B2b (ii, iii, v) C2a (i), E (Standard IUCN, 2010). It is caused by over exploitation for export to Chinese as a high value medicine and the environment are serious effected by human activities (deforestation for wood exploitation, use land for crop, especially planting Amomum least tsaoko).
Laichau ginseng is determined as sub-species of Panax Vietnamensis with the scietific name Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus based on characteristic of Morphology and sequences of matK and ITS-rDNA
Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus may have similar saponins with P. vietnamensis var. vietnamensis and P. stipuleanatus.
- Applied results:
+The study results confirmed the Panax species collected in Lai Chau is Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus that have valuable in medicine because it may contain saponins similar to P. vietnamensis var. vietnamensis and P. stipuleanatus.
+ Determined the natural distribution, living conditions and status of Laichau’s ginseng so that lead to the proposed plan of conservation and sustainable development of this valuable medicinal species.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- We identified the scientific name of Panax species grows in Laichau as Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus K. Komatsu, S. Zhu & S.Q. Cai, 2003.
- We identified P. vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus may contain saponins similar to P. vietnamensis.
- We determined the location distribution, the living conditions of Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus.
- We published matK gene and the ITS-rDNA gene sequences of Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus, P. vietnamensis var. vietnamensis and P. stipuleanatus to the GenBank.

Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus specimens were kept at the Vietnam National Museum of Nature (VNMN)
The leave and rhizome samples of Panax vietnamensis var. vietnamensis, Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus and Panax stipuleanatus were kept at deep freezer, Institute of Ecology and Biological Reources (IEBR)
Nucleotide sequence data of matK and ITS-rDNA of Panax vietnamensis var. vietnamensis, Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus and Panax stipuleanatus were submitted to GenBank.
The HPLC/UV data of Panax vietnamensis var. vietnamensis, Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus and Panax stipuleanatus were kept at the Institute of Marine Biochemistry and Vietnam National Museum of Nature.
All the specific reports were kept at the Vietnam National Museum of Nature

Research region

We would suggest apply the Project’s results for the preservation and suitable development of Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus in Lai Chau province.
