Goal and objectives of the project

- Feasibility study, prize the pollution of mangrove forest and propose solutions
- Database contrucstion, study toward potential use and environmental protection of the mangrove species of the genus Annona
- Study on chemical constituents, cytotoxic evaluation to verify the potential use of the genus Annona.
- Strengthening the capacity of conservation, exploitation, sustainable use and protection of the environment for young scientists.
- Expanding international cooperation

Main results

Theoretical results:
a. Collecting the information toward potential use and the pollution of mangrove forest
b. Collecting the sample (30 kg of fruits and 30 kg of foliage). The methanol extracts of dried fruits and foliage were divided into 8 small fractions (hexan, chloroform or dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and water).
c. Evaluating the cytotoxic activity of 8 fractions on two human cancer cell lines, LU-1 and KB. The fractions AGLH, AGLD, AGQH, AGQC and AGW exhibited strong inhibitory activities with IC50 values ranging of 1.08 – 9.02 µg/ml; especially AGLD, AGQC and AGQW.
d. Isolating and elucidating the structure of 5 compounds, 3 megastigmanes and 2 phenolic compounds, from chloroform and water fractions of fruits.

e. Award of VAST’s President for young scientist (12nd): “Megastigmanes from fruits of Annona glabra” and submitting to Journal of Science and Technology (accepted).
f. Opening a VAST’s project with title: Study to isolating acetogenin and cytotoxic compounds from Annona glabra.
g. Contributing to training a PhD student and 2 undergraduate students.
h. Inviting Japanese scientists (5 times): exchange, traning young scientists of Vietnam (procedure of the marine sponge collection, …). Both sides also applied the new proposed project: Search for medicinal compounds against tubercolosis from Vietnamese marine resources (focus on the marine invertebrates).
i. Sending out 5 Vietnamese young scientists to Osaka University, Japan: training, conference…

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

a. The cytotoxic results demonstrated that hexane, chloroform and water fractions possessing anticancer activities; especially from the fruits. It opens up huge possibilities for applications of fruits and further research is needed.
b. Improving the knowledge and technique
c. Expanding international cooperation
