Goal and objectives of the project

Produce and apply the products of Fe/Al LDH nanoparticles to enhance the resistance to acid soil toxics of high-yield rice cultivars (but are susceptible to acidic soil) so that they can be grown on acidic soil.

Main results

- Theoretical results: This is a new applied research on nano-materials in agriculture. There are many results on the application of nano-materials as a carrier for many bio-compounds because of their simple production method, low cost, and high efficiency on bio-compound absorbing and carrying. However, this study open a new research field of nano-materials on repression the penetration of environmental toxics intro grown plants, especially for the plants grow in acidic soil. In present, although there are many conventional methods to improve the toxics in acidic soil for crop growing, this study is a novel research on improving the toxics in acidic soil by using nano-materials. In this study, the beginning results showed that the Fe/Al LDH nanoparticles significantly repressed the toxics penetrating into rice plants grown in acidic soil through the lower Fe, and Al concentrations in root and leaf rice plants in comparison to the control plants. Consequently, in the severe acidic soil, the treated rice plants showed higher mass production and better respiration and photosynthesis regulation by lower intoxicated of treated plants in comparison to control plants. For the field testing, the beginning results showed the same tendency as the lab testing. Based on this study, one paper was published on International Conference for Nano-technology and one paper in the progress of publication on Biotechnology Journal. Furthermore, one master and engineer graduated based on the support of this project.
- Applied results: The Fe/Al LDH nanoparticles products from this study were applied to field rice plants on Summer-Autumn season 2013 and Winter-Spring season 2013-2014 at Tan Lap Acidic Soil Research Center, Moc Hoa, Long An.
