Goal and objectives of the project

To clarify the characteristics of the present tectonic stress field in relation with geological complications and submit adaptable preventing and mitigating solutions.

Main results

* Theoretical results

  • The present tectonic stress field in study area has been established according to volcanic, earthquake focal mechanisms and petroleum drilling data, used for studying the present displacements within Earth crust as well as for determining the causes and mechanics of geological complications.
  • The seismic-tectonic characteristics have been studied in detail in order to establish the close relationship between earthquake, volcanic activities with active faults.

* Applied results

  • The sketch map of Pleistocene-Quarternary active faults on the southeastern Vietnam continental shelf has been more completed, including 14 major faults in which 3 ones have been re-determined based on new reflection seismic and earthquake data, the others have been also corrected, accurated by these data source.
  • Seismic swams have been determined as nature expression of seismicity on the southeastern Vietnam continental shelf, repeated in 35 – 45 year periods with the durations of from several months to several years and influented by periodical activeness of certain fault systems.
  • The adaptable solutions have been proposed in order to mitigate nature hazards and stable develope for the region.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results
  • The stress field determined by volcanic data is first time studied and applied in Vietnam, especially adapted in low seismicity but abundant of volcanic data.
  • The manners of stress field have been used in studying dynamic conditions of active fault systems as well as first time used for determining the causes and mechanics of  geological complications.
  • According to the study results, the tectonic activities are continuing in Quartenary which increased along active faults, especially at different dynamic regime regions.
  • Supply the most complete and accuracy data base of active fault graphic map, stress field, earthquake list, earthquake – volcanic source regions as well as the seismic risk parameters of source regions.
  • Based on the determined seismic swam in study area, the increasing of seismicity since the beginning of XXI century could be ensured not by induce causes, influented from petroleum exploitation as assumed before, but only the beginning of a new  seismic swam after a quiet duration of 35 – 40 years.
  • The determined highly active volcanic source regions are important and essential guidances for volcanic survey, investigation and volcanic risk estimations.

Research region

Resources and Environment Divisions, Hazadous prevent, mitigate and rescue Commitees of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Binh Thuan và Ninh Thuan Provinces.

Recommendations
  • To study in more detail the northern extension of the Mang Cau-Phu Quy fault system through eastern Ninh Thuan in order to estimate its volcanic and earthquake influences to the coastal zones and important constructions.
  • The tectonic depression is regarded as an important factor to increase the geological complications on the eastern South coastal zone. Therefore it is necessary to carry out quantitative researches for this phenomenon in the future.
  • To establish additional earthquake and volcanic observatories on Phu Quy, Con Dao Islands, Mui Ne and eastern Ninh Thuan to observe the earthquake and volcanic activities on the southeastern Vietnam continental shelf, especially at high potential regions.
