Goal and objectives of the project
  • Identify and evaluate status-quo and change of natural water surface in Hanoi since 1980.
  • Propose solution of planning orientation and inundation prevention.
Main results
  • Theoretical results: Contribute  to affirm the pre-eminence of remote sensing techniques in rapidly analyzing  the changes of natural water surface in 9 inner districts of Hanoi, saving the time, cost and human resources but ensuring the high accuracy.
  • Applied results: Provide supports to Hanoi administrators in proposing effective solutions of inundation prevention, ensuring the sustainable balance development of marine ecosystem.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results
  • Building database on status-quo and development of water surface in 9 urban districts of Hanoi by multitemporal remote sensing data combined with GIS.
  • Initially proposing measures of inundation prevention for Hanoi city.
Products of the project
  • Report of analyzing and processing data obtained from field works
  • 8 thematic reports
  • Topographical maps at scales of 1: 10,000; 1: 25,000 and 1: 50,000 in ArcGIS format
  • Georeferenced time series satellite images (1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010) in VN-2000 datum
  • 04 referenced thematic maps (transformed to VN-2000 datum) scale 1:50,000 (Soil, Vegetation, Land-use, and Land-cover maps)
  • 09 new thematic maps: 5 water surface maps in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000 at scale of 1:50,000; 2 water surface maps in 2005, 2010 at scale 1:10.000; 2 maps of water surface change within 1980- 2010 and 2005-2010 at scale of 1:25.000
  • Final report.
Research region

The study result would be served for macro-management of Hanoi People committee as well as scientific bases for Hanoi relevant institutions in planning inundation prevention and environment protection.

Recommendations

For more effective solutions of inundation prevention for Hanoi city, the further 2nd phase of this project is proposed with a study for entire Hanoi territory, supplementing the data in rainy season 2010 and 2012, using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images for near real-time data analysis.
