Goal and objectives of the project

• Establishing technical processes for fabricating polymethylmetacrylate, polyurethane based coatings and epoxy based composite filled CNTs. Requirements:

High mechanical and physical strength, weather and environment resistance, durability.

Shielding effectiveness in RF and X-band ranges from 15 – 20 dB

• Conducting experiments in applicability of the materials for working and living
place protection against electromagnetic waves.

Main results

• Theoretical results:

  1. Covalent functionalization was chose as an appropriate method for CNTs modification, making good interations between CNTs and polymer matrix.
  2. Technical manufacturing processes for PMMA paint (1 component), PU paint (2 components) filled CNTs modified with strong acid (H2SO4/HCl) were formed.
  3. Technical manufacturing processes for epoxy composite filled CNTs modified by amin-functionalization reaction were created.
  4. Mechanical properties of PMMA, PU coating (adhesion, impact strength, fracture toughness, hardness) and epoxy composite (tensile, Charpy impact strength, tensile modulus) are improved considerably with the use of CNTs. Notably, PU/CNTs coating has good durability, weathering and environment resistance, epoxy/CNTs composite has great resistance to severely erosive envirnoments (salt, base, acid)
  5. Effect of CNTs loading on electromagnetic shielding properties of PMMA/CNTs, PU/CNTs and epoxy/CNTs at 100 MHz ÷ 3 GHz band and 8 -12 GHz band was investigated. PMMA filled 25 wt% CNTs have SE of about 31 dB, thus shielding ability of more than 99.9 %. PU coating and epoxy composite filled with 30 wt% CNTs have SE value of 23 – 24 dB, thus shielding ability of more than 99%. SE of the materials are also more dependent on the number of layer than material thickness. It means that 2 layers of the material (thickness of one layer is 1 mm) would have higher SE in comparison with one layer of 2 mm of the material.
  6. Electromagnetic shielding mechanism of CNT-filled polymer was clarified. It was the result of electromagnetic wave absorption and reflection of the materials. PMMA/CNTs (25 wt% CNTs) coating can absorb about 70 % and reflect about 30% of electromagnetic power.

• Applied results:

  1. 2 testing models of electromagnetic chamber were set up: one practical model achieve shielding power of 97 % damaging effect (SE of higher 15 dB), one model met researching partner requirements (B42 department – the 5th general directorate – the Ministry of Public Security) can prevent signal trans-receiving with diameter of 3 meters.
  2. Cooperating with Vietnam Petro Paint Joint Stock Company in technology transfer planning. Trial painting for 01 house under impact of electromagnetic field of BTS (Viettel and Vinaphone) according to end-user request.
Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

• Creating a new trend in the production of paint and composite materials on the basis of CNT (a domestic hi-tech product, 1st prize of VIFOTEC) applications in recent scientific and practical conditions of our countries.
• The products of the project have real and practical meanings in life, security and national defence.
