Project's information

Project's title Studies on the scientific basis for making products supporting treatment of the renal calculus from leaves of Coffea arabica
Research hosting institution Institute of Chemistry
Project leader’s name Dr. Nguyen Quyet Tien
Project duration 01/01/2011 - 01/01/2012
Project’s budget 400.000.000 VND
Classify Fair
Goal and objectives of the project

-    Isolation and chemical structural elucidation of 3–4 compounds from water extract of Coffea arabica leaves.
-    200g products (CAFETASO) supporting treatment of the renal calculus from leaves of Coffea arabica and set up basic standards of CAFETASO products.
- Determining contents of several heavy metals (Lead/Pb; Mercury/Hg, ..) and the median lethal dose LD50 of product CAFETASO.
- Set up fingerprint LC/MS method for quick determining of major compounds in the samples of leaves of Coffea arabica.
-    1-2 papers  in Scientific Conference or Scientific Trade Journal.

Main results

-    Eleven compounds were isolated from Coffea arabica leaves and chemical structures of 9 compounds among them were  elucidated. Three compounds including caffeine, 3β-hydroxylup-12-ene-28-oic acid and ursolic acid show good bioactivities (diuretic effect, anti-HIV, anti-cancer ).
-    600g products supporting treatment of renal caculus were manufactured with the basic standards (formation, contents of heavy metals and the median lethal dose (LD50) of product CAFETASO).
-    Contents of several heavy metals (Lead/Pb; Mercury/Hg,...) were determined according to Standards QCVN 8-1:2011/BYT of Vietnamese Health Ministry.
-    The median lethal dose LD50 of product CAFETASO was determined with LD50 ~ 92g drug/kg).
-    Fingerprint LC/MS method was set up successfully for quick determining of major compounds in the samples of leaves of Coffea arabica.
-    01 paper was reported in Proceeding of Scientific Conference of ICH, VAST (2011) and 01 paper was published in Journal of Chemistry of VAST (2012). T.50 (4B). pp. 54-58.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

-    First time, the Coffea arabica leaves sample in Vietnam was studied on chemical composition and several remarkable bioactive compounds were isolated such as caffeine, 3β-hydroxylup-12-ene-28-oic acid and ursolic acid.
-    600g products supporting treatment of renal caculus were manufactured with the basic standards (formation, contents of heavy metals and the median lethal dose LD50 of product CAFETASO).
-    Fingerprint LC/MS method was set up successfully for quick determining of major compounds in the samples of leaves of Coffea arabica..

Recommendations

Further studies are required to investigate the potent treating renal calculus patients in large amount with products CAFETASO, the semi-acute toxicity of the products CAFETASO from Coffea arabica leaves. So that, we propose a new project: “Study on technological process of manufucturing funtional foods supporting treatment of renal calculus patients from leaves of Coffea arabica L.)” and please help us executing this suggesting project.
