Goal and objectives of the project
  • Research on fabrication technology of Polylactic acid based on cellulose, hemicellulose, starting from agricultural and forestry wastes to the end product-polylactic acid
  • It is proposed as primary step for the development and application of polylactic acid fabrication technology based on Japan’s technology
  • Estimating the potential of application of this technology with Vietnam’s conditions.
Main results

Theoretical results:

- The steps of fabrication technology of polylactic acid based on agricultural and forestry wastes have been estimated with the representative is corn trunk and corn cob
- Hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose to monosaccharide with the concentrations from 45.8 to 47.7 mg/ml
- Fermentation for biosynthesis of L-lactic acid with concentrations from 18.3 to 22.4 g/l. The obtained L-lactic acid has concentrations from 64.8 to 70%
- The PLA with Mw. >100000 Da has successfully synthesized by using 0.05% SnOct2 as the catalysis and the co-initiators are glycerol and 1,4-butanediol
- The structure and characteristic of the synthesized PLA have examined by spectroscopy methods (IR, NMR), thermal analysis, morphology, tensile strength, and elongation

Applied results: The synthesized PLA is satisfy for application in biodegradable film for packaging.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

This is the first time PLA is synthesized from agricultural and forestry wastes containing cellulose and hemicellulose (rice straw, corn cob, bagasse)

The project shows high application potential and environmental effect, it should be continued to invest for further study about this new and advanced technology
