Goal and objectives of the project

- Provide the information in detail and more adequate about the seismicity of  the southeast section of the Ma-River fault zone for more reliable assessement of earthquake potential and other hazards of tectonic origin in the fault zone.
- Provide some dynamic parameters of ground motion in the Nghi Son industrial zone and Thanh Hoa City to orient the territorial planing followed the earthquake resistant design standard.

Main results

- Theoretical results:
    The deployment of dense seismic network with 12 broadband seismometers along the southeast section of the Ma-River fault zone in Thanh Hoa province since November, 2009 is allowed us to estimate in detail the seismicity of the study region. A not small portion of earthquakes, most of them are small was recorded by the network. By by using the program package Hypo71PC, 190 events were located. About 70% of them are the earthquakes of magnitude less than 1.0 on Richter scale; 5 earthquakes with magnitude >3.0 and the remain with magnitude from 2.0 to 3.0 Richter degree.
    The correlation with tectonic data is detected that,  the earthquakes were occurred in all the branches of the Ma-River fault zone. A not small portion of  earthquakes were recorded along the section from Thuong Xuan District to the sea coastal line, where is accepted  relatively stable in the previous studies. A  number of earthquakes generated by other faults, such as Son La - Bim Son, Da-River, Red-River, Hieu-River and Ca-River was also recorded by the netwok. The noticeable microearthquakes were detected inside the young not well studied submeridian tectonic fault Thuong Xuan - Ba Thuoc and Nong Cong - Thach Thanh. Thus, the tectonic faults are active where the earthqukes occurred. Based on the distribution of earthquake epicenters we can define more exactly the distribution of the active faults on the plane. The results of our study can be contributed for better understanding the seismic activity of the faults in the study region. The characteristics of local stress field reflected in the study also are useful for the same direction of research in the future.
    The study of dynamic parameter of ground motion in this project was carried out by the limited microtremo measurement points. From the preliminary results is reflected more stable ground foundation at Nghi Son compared with that one at Thanh Hoa city area. Except some points distributed in the old city and in the northern part of the new extention city area an amplification is reached the values 4 -5, at most of the remain points of both locations Nghi Son and Thanh Hoa city the amplifications are relatively small and varried in a range 1.2 - 3.5.

 - Applied results :
    The distribution of the earthquake epicenters determined in this study is allowed us to more accurately define the distribution of the active faults on the plane. These data are significant for the territorial planing in the study region.
    The dominant frequency of ground motion and the earthquake amplification recorded in even limited points of Nghi Son and Thanh Hoa city areas are also useful to orient the planing for earthquake resistant design in the future.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- A not quite seismic activity along the southeast section of the Ma-River fault zone and detection of a not small portion of microearthqukes inside of young submeridian faults obtained in this detail study can be accepted as new results in this research direction.
- The focal mechanism of some earthquakes calculated in this study is also provided the new information related to the local stress field.
- From the microtremo measurements the project is also provided in the first time the dominant frequency of ground motion and earthquake amplification in a number of points of Nghi Son and Thanh Hoa city locations.

Research region

- The research institutions have deal with geological hazard study as well  as related organizations of Thanh Hoa province.

Recommendations

- Much better if we are able to continue this resaerch with the redistribution of the seismic network in a larger study region.
- An earthquake microzonation for Thanh Hoa city area is necessary.
