Goal and objectives of the project

Study the possibilities of forming trihalomethanes minor products during water chlorination in some water factories and centralized water stations which used surface water. By comparing with the concentrations of the other disinfectants as ozone, electrochemical sodium hypochlorite and anolyde, we have proposed optimal disinfection technology for minimizing the forming of hazardous compounds in drinking water.

Main results

Theoretical results:

  • Built up a simultaneous trihalomethanes (THMs) analytical process in purified water from the water factories which used surface water with method detection limit (MDL) from 0.24 to 0.30 µg/L and relative standard deviation (RSD) below 20%.
  • Practical results of the application of electroactived solution anolyde to disinfect surface water which likely reduced THMs’ formation 40% to 50% compared with the application of other chlorous disinfectants as chlorine gas, electrochemical sodium hypochlorite (Javen).

Applied results: Application of simultaneous analytical process to analyse some samples which were produced by water from Northern Vietnam’s rivers. The result showed that the total amount of THMs was approximately lower (below 32µg/L) than WHO’s recommended standards and Vietnamese standards for qualities of drinking water.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

Studying some factors as pH, temperature, concentration of disinfectants which effect the formation of THMs during the water disinfection process with electroactived solution Anolyte. Then thereby proposing water disinfection process which reduced the formation of THMs.

Research region

Apply to small-scale water stations (capacity below 2000m3 per day). A disinfection system is deverloping in a station (1000m3 per day) in Ba Vi, Hanoi.

 

Recommendations

Extend the study of the THMs infection in high-risk drinking water resources near industrial complexes, mining infrastructures to prevent large-scale infection along with create a strategy to reduce the amount of THMs in drinking water like in the developed countries as USA, Canada…
