Goal and objectives of the project
  • Study on cultivation and developing Amorphophallus konjac and some other species of the genus Amorphophallus for functional food materials for treating diebet, cholesterol and obesity.
  • From studying results and experimences collected from farmers to offer process of culture and breeding Amorphophallus plants.

Main results

Theoretical results:

  • 4 species A. konjac, A. corrugatus, A. krausei and A. yunnanensis have been selected as a prospecting species for glucomannan production.
  • Initial process of propagating and growing Amorphophallus from baby and mother tubers in Vietnam has been offered.
  • The content of 5-8% glucomannan in fresh tuber (equal 17% of dried weight) of A. paeoniifolius and 10-15% glucomannan in fresh tuber (equal 34-50% of dried weight) of A. corrugates have been identified.
  • The content of glucomannan in A. corrugatus is different at its growth periods. This content in fresh tuber in June, September and December changes from 1.5%, 4.5% and 15% respectively.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results
  • The first time discovered a population of Amorphophallus konjac in Vietnam (Dong Van and Quan Ba district of Ha Giang province).
  • The first time the content of glucomannan in the tubers of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius and A. corrugatus have been identified.
  • From the studying results 4 species such as Amorphophallus corrugatus, A. krausei and A. yunnanensis have been selected as a prospective species for glucomannan materials.

Recommendations

For completing process of cultural and breeding Amorphophallus plants and applying in production, the stydies of growth and development as well breeding should be continued.
