Goal and objectives of the project

To point out some water supply solutions for areas still lack of water and areas with similar conditions.

Main results

Theorerical results:

  • Three types of water difficulty areas have been indentified so that scientific and technological background for water survey and exploitation could be proceeded easely. There are limestone area with deep groundwater, limestone area with groundwater level strongly fluctuated and  schist and siltstone area with deep erosion level.
  • Detect the existence and wide distribution of the aquifer within the epikarst zone together with their characteristics on the limestone mountains. This water layer is capable of providing relatively abundant water for upland residential areas.
  • Proposed a number of technology solutions to provide water supply for residential high mountains areas, of which the actual models tested of three water reservoirs are capable of wide application.

Applied Result: Technology model of hanging reservoir that has been tested on pilot and productional scale is capable of wide application. Ha Giang, Cao Bang and a some regions have used  this model to solve water difficulty (built more than 100 small reservoirs).

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results
  • Detect the existence and wide distribution of subsurface hillside water (epikarst waters) in some karst regions of Vietnam and offer solutions to exploit them for water supply. In the world literature there is still little mention on this problem.
  • Set up the technology of hanging reservoir that has wide application in practice. In the world literature there is still little on this problem.
Products of the project
  • Scientific papers in referred journals (list): 1. Scientific and technological solutions for addressing drinking and production water problem in the high mountains of Ha Giang. Proceedings of the Workshop on Planning and Investment, "For Ha Giang development". Hanoi 4.2011.
  • Technological products (describe in details: technical characteristics, place):
  1. 1 Synthesis Report of project results: Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology.
  2. 1 water reservoir constructed by hanging technology application, with a capacity of 3000 m3, completed in 2002, in Xa Phin, Dong Van district, Ha Giang province.
  3. 1 water reservoir with a capacity of 800 m3 constructed by surface water harvesting technology model, completed in 2002, in Team 6, Tea Farm Moc Chau, Son La province.
  4. 1 reservoir constructed by cave water regulation technology model, with a capacity of nearly 1 million m3, completed in 2000, at the Phong Lai, Thuan Chau, Son La province.
Research region

The northern mountainous provinces, the Central Highlands

Recommendations
  • Technology to improve the process of hanging lake
  • To complete a number of models tested
