The Vietnam National Museum of Nature was established by the Decree No. 27/ND-CP, dated January 16, 2004 (presently, Decree No.106/2022/ND-CP dated December 24, 2022) of Government. The functions, tasks, powers and organizational structure of the Museum are specified in Decision No. 305/QD-KHCNVN, dated March 10, 2006 (presently, Decision No. 304/QD-VHL dated 1 March, 2023 by the President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology).

FUNCTIONS AND TASKS

Functions:

The VNMN has the function of museum researching, collecting, preserving, storing, inspecting, and exhibiting specimens of biology, geology- geography, anthropology (archeology), and documents of nature and natural resources in Vietnam and abroad; research, basic investigation; development and application of technology transfer;  conservation of natural resources;  consulting  of science and technology services and human resource training in related fields.

Tasks:

1. Scientific research, compilation of standard regulations in the fields of earth science, life science, museum, conservation of natural resources, organize the collection of specimens, building, managing and exploiting of National specimen collection on nature.
2. To organize the collection, reception, storage and preservation of specimens and artifacts, perform specimen processing and exhibition design; organize the displays, exhibitions and appropriate activities in order to fully and comprehensively introduce the natural values of Vietnam and the world.
3. To research, analysis, classification and assessment of biological samples, geography - geology (soil, rock, minerals, paleontology, meteorites...), anthropology ( archeology, anthropological evolution, ethnic culture), specimens and artifacts using modern scientific, technical and technological methods.
4. To research, build, maintain and develop gene banks of all living and extinct organisms.
5. To research and  basic investigation, monitoring and assessment of environmental impacts, and proposing scientific and technological solutions to climate change adaptation, prevention and mitigation of impacts of natural disasters and humans on the natural environment and society.
6. To research, development and application of technology, product development in the fields of earth science, life science, biology, medicine and pharmaceutical chemistry.
7. To build a data bank of specimens and artifacts of the Museum System.
8. To organize the implementation of scientific research projects on earth science, life science, museum, sustainable use and development of natural resources, rescue of animals, plants.
9. To organize activities of consultancy on science, technology, technic, expertise, trial production, museum technic, scientific and technical services according to functions and tasks.
10. To participate in training in the fields of earth science, life science, museum, conservation and related fields.
11. To organize communication activities, disseminate knowledge, propagate and educate to raise awareness and sense of protection of nature and community environment.
12. To mobilize, receive and use aid sources from organizations and individuals for rescue, museum research, conservation and development of organisms; import and export, exchange of specimens, artifacts, items, scientific and technological supplies and scientific publications.
13. To co-operate with international and domestic organizations and individuals of scientists in the above fields according to functions and tasks.
14. To manage organization and agency; manage and employ officers and employees in accordance with the law and the VAST regulations.
15. To manage finance and assets in accordance with the law and VAST regulations
16. To perform other tasks assigned by VAST President.

ACTIVITIES

•    To implement the professional activities following the assigned function, task.
•    To collect specimens, building the National Specimen Collection,exhibition, communication and community education, manipulating, preserving specimens, and exhibition design.
•    To prepare for construction Vietnam National Museum of Nature.

MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS

•    After 10 years development, Vietnam National Museum of Nature received the Labour Medal given by President of Socialist  Republic of Vietnam for notable achievements in science research (year 2016).
•    In 2021, received a merit given by the Prime Minister for achievements.
•    The project of building the Vietnam National Museum of Nature in Quoc Oai town, Quoc Oai district, Hanoi with an area of 38 hectares has been approved detailed planning 1/500 scale which is being prepared the necessary procedure for construction, the project has been approved by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (Decision No. 2888 dated December 28, 2023). Currently, the Vietnam National Museum of Nature is carrying out compensation and site clearance procedures to implement the project.
•    The project of Center for Conservation and rescue of animal and plant Natural in Phong Dien District, Thua Thien Hue has been put into operation according to its assigned functions and tasks. Since 2023, the Center has received and rescued a number of wild animal species, preserving more than 1,500 individuals of 26 valuable native plant species. Phong Dien Center expansion project phase 2 (2021-2025) is under preparation for investment.
•    Specimens collection: 105.878 specimens
•     Scientific articles: In 2023, 96 published articles including: 55 articles of list SCIE (IF ≥ 1), Scopus (Citescore ≥ 2) criteria. ) or SCImago (Q2 or higher) (achieving 1.38 articles/1 staff member) (including 15 high-quality international publications); 01 article published in VAST01 magazine; 06 published in VAST02 magazine; 19 articles published in international journals with ISSN codes; 01 patent in Vietnam; 03 published monographs with ISBN codes; 11 articles published in other national journals with ISSN codes. Discovered 86 new species (73 animals, 13 plants), 05 new species (animals), 04 new subspecies (insects), 10 additional species for Vietnam; Announced 2 new species, 27 new species for science (insects); 2 new species (plants);
• Training: PhD abroad (successfully defended thesis).
• International cooperation: 37 Memorandums of Understanding and Cooperation Agreements with foreign partners (in effect) in many countries around the world.
