Functions:

The Museum performs the following functions: Museum researching; collecting, analyzing, examining, preserving, exhibiting, and presenting specimens, artifacts, and documentation regarding organisms, geography–geology, and anthropology, as well as nature of Vietnam and abroad; conducting basic research and surveys; engaging in technology development and innovation; acquiring and mastering technologies; undertaking digital transformation; providing consultancy and training; developing high-level human resources; international cooperation and providing science and technology services in the fields of earth sciences, life sciences, museology, natural resource conservation, and flora and fauna rescue, as well as other related areas, in accordance with the regulations of the Party, State laws, and the Vietnam Academy of science and Technology (VAST).

Tasks:

The Museum is tasked with:

1) Organizing the collection, acquisition, analysis, examination, and preservation of specimens, artifacts, and documentation regarding organisms, geography–geology, and anthropology; building, managing, and utilizing the National Specimen Collection on Nature; carrying out specimen preparation, building scenario and exhibition design,  conservation of natural resource  rescue of animals and plants; organizing display, exhibition and appropriate activities to comprehensively introduce natural values.

2) Conducting basic research and complilation standards and technical regulations in fields of earth sciences, anthropology, life sciences, museology, conservation, rescue operations, display, specimen preparation, and specimen management.

3) Conducting basic research and surveys, monitoring, and environmental impact assessments; and proposing scientific and technological solutions for climate change adaptation and for the prevention and mitigation of impacts caused by natural disasters and human activities on the natural and social environments.

4) Developing technologies in fields of earth sciences, anthropology, life sciences, medicine and pharmacy, medicinal chemistry, museum operations, conservation, and rescue activities.

5) Providing consultancy on policies, strategies, planning, science, technology, engineering, professional operations, pilot production, museum activities, conservation, rescue, and scientific-technical services in accordance with assigned functions and tasks; providing professional consultancy and guidance to museums in the museum system and network, as well as related units.

6) Training and developing highly qualified human resources in fields of research on earth sciences, anthropology, and life sciences, as well as in museum operations, conservation, rescue, exhibition, specimen preparation, specimen management, and other related fields, in accordance with the law.

7) Conducting research on innovation; acquisition, decoding, and master technologies; digital transformation in fields of earth sciences, anthropology, life sciences, museum operations, sustainable development of natural resources, conservation and rescue of animals and plants, and other related fields, in accordance with the law.

8) Providing scientific, technological, training, and capacity-building services in the fields of earth sciences, anthropology, life sciences, museum operations, sustainable development of natural resources, conservation and rescue of flora and fauna, and related fields, in accordance with the law.

9) Researching, building, exploiting, and utilizing databases of specimens, artifacts, and documentation of the Museum and the museum system and network; maintaining and developing gene banks and cell of biological species.

10) Organizing communication and dissemination activities regarding science, technology, and knowledge; conducting educational outreach to raise awareness and foster a sense of responsibility for nature and environmental protection within the community. Proposing measures to promote the sustainable development of natural resources and the conservation and rescue of animals and plants.

11) Establishing and developing museums in fields of earth sciences, anthropology, life sciences, sustainable development of natural resources, and the conservation and rescue of aninals and plants.

12) Mobilizing, receiving, and utilizing aid from organizations and individuals to carry out museum activities, natural resource conservation, and the rescue of animals and plants; importing, exporting, and exchanging specimens, artifacts, items, scientific and technological materials, and scientific publications.

13) Engaging in international cooperation in fields of earth sciences, anthropology, life sciences, museum activities, sustainable development of natural resources, the conservation and rescue of animals and plants, and other related fields.

14) Managing the organization and structure; managing museum staff  in accordance with the law and regulations of the VAST.

15) Managing the unit's finances and assets in accordance with the law and regulations of the VAST.

16) Performing other tasks assigned by the President of the VAST.
