The other achievements in science and technology activities

a) Research Achievements of Truong Sa Archipelago
As the pioneer in the investigation and scientific research of Truong Sa archipelago area during the past 30 years, the Institute has completed 10 state-level projects under the East Sea - Islands Program. The Institute annually organizes survey trips of marine scientific research to Truong Sa Islands area. The collected information of geology, geophysics and atmospheric physics over the past many years provides the scientific basis for the construction of seaports, social-economic development, and particularly the completion of the Atlas of natural conditions of Truong Sa archipelago in 2007 contributed to affirming our country's sovereignty over this archipelago. The Institute has built and maintained the obvesation station in Truong Sa Islands for many years.
b) Research achievements on the outer limits of the continental shelf
Since 1995, the Institute started to carry out state-level projects on determining the outer limits of the continental shelf of Vietnam under the Marine     Research Program of KHCN-06: “Scientific basis for determination of the outer limits of the continental shelf of Vietnam, initially establishing important scientific bases for negotiation of maritime boundary delimitation with adjacent countries in East Sea area. Results of KC.09.10 project at state level (2000-2004) “Scientific and law base for the determination of the maritime boundary and the outer limit of Southwest sea” is a basis for the planning of national sea boundaries in the sea area overlap among Vietnam - Indonesia - Malaysia - Thailand - Cambodia (co-operate with the National Boundary Commission - Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
The scientific results of the above projects have greatly contributed to the accomplishment of one special task: "Completion of the documentation on the outer limits of the continental shelf of Vietnam" which submitted to the United Nations in May 2009. According to 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in addition to the exclusive economic zone extended from the baseline to 200 nautical miles, countries have the right to extend the continental shelf area to 350 nautical miles from the baseline based on scientific and geological evidence.
Implementing this project in the period of 2007-2009, the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics divided the documentation into 3 reports to determine the extended continental shelf for 3 separate parts of the sea: North, Middle and South of Vietnam Sea. The project is extremely important in defining maritime borders and asserting Vietnam sovereignty over the sea. The research results of the project have confirmed the quality and capacity of scientific research of the Institute in meeting the needs of important tasks of the country. The results of the project have been highly appreciated by domestic and international public opinion, and received the complements of the senior leaders of Comunist Party and State of Vietnam.
c)  To Complete the  Atlas of natural conditions of the East Sea
For the first time, Vietnam has an impeccable and integrated Atlas of natural conditions of the East Sea, including 63 maps of different fields, published in 2007, as the scientific basis for marine research with multiple branches of marine science, as well as for planning, economic development and maritime security, and in general to affirm Vietnam’s sovereignty over the sea and islands. The publishment of “the atlas of natural conditions of East Sea and adjacent area” obviously demonstrated the research achievements of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics in the field of marine geology and geophyisics as well as related directions.
