FUNCTIONS AND TASKS

Functions:

Fundamental research and investigation; technology development and application; provision of services, scientific and Technological consultancy; training of highly qualified human resources in the field of Earth Sciences and other related fields as prescribed by law.

Tasks:

Basic research and investigation

a) Research on the structure, tectonics, geodynamics, evolution of the lithosphere, mantle and geological processes,
b) Research on ore-forming and mineralization processes; establish the premise for discovering and assessing the prospects of essential mineral types and other geological resources on land and sea,
c) Research on natural geographical laws and processes; geographical characteristics of resources and environment on land, sea, and islands,
d) Research on the Earth's magnetic field, ionosphere, solar activity, space weather - atmosphere and related effects,
e) Research on the causes, formation mechanisms and development laws of natural disasters (earthquakes, tsunamis, flash floods, landslides, droughts, saltwater intrusion, land subsidence, storms, thunderstorms, heavy rains, etc.), climate change, propose solutions to minimize damage,
f) Conduct basic surveys, monitor and comprehensively evaluate natural conditions, natural resources, environment, and natural disasters,
g) Investigate hydro-lithodynamic processes in estuaries, coastal areas, continental shelves and deep seas,
h) Organize monitoring, management and operation of the national network of geophysical stations and other earth science stations. Carry out storage, management, exploitation and use of national geophysical information and data and other earth science data.

Applied research and technology development

a) Perfecting and developing technologies and techniques, improving the effectiveness of research and investigation of natural resources, environment and natural disasters,
proposing solutions for rational use of resources, prevention of natural disasters and environmental protection,
b) Researching and assessing earthquake hazards, earthquake zoning and micro-zoning, earthquake and tsunami risks for key projects,
c) Developing and applying advanced technologies in investigation and management of natural resources and environment, prevention and mitigation of natural disaster risks, exploitation and rational use of land, water, mineral and marine resources,
d) Deploying and transferring technology in the field of Earth Sciences and other related fields.

Organize earthquake reporting and tsunami warnings according to State regulations; coordinate with relevant domestic and foreign agencies in disaster response and damage mitigation due to earthquakes and tsunamis,

Provide scientific and technological services in the field of Earth Sciences and other related fields:

- Inspection and calibration of monitoring equipment,
- Consulting, design, construction, inspection of lightning protection systems, equipment, lightning warnings, lightning filtering for all types of works,
- Investigation, survey, exploration (geology, geophysics, topography, minerals, natural resources, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, etc.),

Analytical services in the field of Earth Sciences and related fields,

Training highly qualified human resources in the field of Earth Sciences and related fields,

International cooperation in scientific research, technology transfer and training in the field of Earth Sciences and related fields,

Manage the organizational and the utilization of civil servants and employees within the unit in accordance with the provisions of the law and the regulations of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

Manage the unit's finances and assets in compliance with the provisions of the law and the regulations of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

Performing other tasks assigned by the President of the Academy.
