Project's information

Project's title Research on cytotoxic secondary metabolites from some medicinal plants growing in Phia Oac - Phia Den National Park, Cao Bang
Research hosting institution Institute of Chemistry
Project leader’s name Dr. Nguyen Xuan Cuong
Project duration 01/01/2024 - 30/06/2026
Project’s budget 1000 million VND
Classify Grade A
Goal and objectives of the project

- Isolation and structure elucidation of secondary metabolites from some medicinal plants growing in Phia Oac - Phia Den National Park.
- Evaluation of cytotoxic activity of isolated compounds.

Main results

+ Completed collection and taxonomic identification of 15 medicinal plants in Phia Oac - Phia Den National Park, Cao Bang.
+ Completed phytochemistry investigation of 3 potential medicinal plants with isolation and structure elucidation of 25 compounds induding 13 from Callicarpa longifolia, 7 from Melicope pteleifolia and 5 from Abroma augustum.
+ Completed evaluation of cytotoxic activity of MeOH extracts and isolated compounds against three human cancer cell lines as HepG2 (liver), SK-LU-1 (lung) and MCF7 (breast). As the obtained results: 10 extracts (IC50 from 38.38 - 99.38 µg/mL) and compounds callicarpol A (CAL4), phenylethyl-rutinoside (ABA2), and pinoresinol 4-O-a-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1®2)-b-D-glucopyranoside (ABA4) (IC50 from 49.38 - 98.91 µM) exhibited cytotoxic effect.
+ Completed evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity via inhibitory effect on NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells of isolated compounds from Callicarpa longifolia. As the obtained results: Compounds longifoliol A (CAL1), longifoliol C (CAL3), callicarpol A (CAL4), 3a,5b-dihydroxy-b-costol (CAL9), trichocarpin (CAL10), and samioside (CAL12) exhibited inhibitory effect (IC50 from 39.03 - 95.60 µM).

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

+ Elucidation of 13 new compounds including 05 new benzopyran derivatives melicopols A-E (BAM2-BAM6)] from Melicope pteleifolia, 03 new isopimarane diterpenes longifoliols A-C (CAL1-CAL3) and 05 new humulane sesquiterpenes callicarpols A-E (CAL4-CAL8)] from Callicarpa longifolia.
+ This is the first report of isolation of humulane sesquiterpenes from the Callicarpa species.
+ First evaluation of cytotoxic activity of new isolated compounds and anti-inflammatory effects of new isolated compounds from Callicarpa longifolia.
