Project's information

Project's title Study on anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities of Vietnamese medicinal plants and phytochemical investigation of a selected species
Project’s code QTRU02.04/20-21
Research hosting institution Institute of Natural Products Chemistry
Coordinating unit, co-chair Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (PIBOC), Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEBRAS), Russian
Project leader’s name Dr. Nguyen Phi Hung and Dr. Irina G. Agafonova
Project duration 01/06/2022 - 31/12/2023
Project’s budget 200 million VND
Classify Grade B
Goal and objectives of the project
- Study on the growth inhibition of some Curcuma species on some tested cancer cell lines.
- Isolation and structural identification of compounds from a selected species.
- Investigation of the growth inhibitory effects of the compounds isolated on selected cancer cell lines.
Main results

- 06 plant samples have been collected, including 05 Curcuma species and 01 Polyalthia suberosa. The cytotoxic activity of these plant extracts has been tested on 04 cancer cell lines including: liver cancer (HepG2), stomach cancer (HGC 27), lung cancer (A549), and breast cancer (MCF-7).
- The chemical composition of Curcuma longa collected in Bac Can has been studied, in which 12 compounds that are derivatives of curcumin have been isolated and structural determined, including a new natural compound.
- The cytotoxic activity on four cancer cell lines (HepG2, HGC 27, A549, and MCF-7), and the inhibitory activity of curcumin (1), demethoxycurcumin (2) and bisdemethoxycurcumin (3) on PTP1B and α-Glucosidase (related to diabetes) enzymes have been evaluated. Furthermore, a computational study (molecular docking) of these three compounds on the molecular target enzyme proteins PTP1B and α-Glucosidase (3W37) has also been studied.
- The content and chemical composition of two essential oil samples of leaves and branches of Polyalthia suberosa have identified. In addition, the biological activity of these two essential oil samples on 03 cancer cell lines: HepG2, MCF7 and A549, as well as their antimicrobial activity on 8 bacterial strains have also evaluated.
- From the results obtained within the research framework of the project, one student has protected her bachelor thesis and 01 Ph.D student is supported for education course.
- 01 SCIE paper has published and one more is under review, in addition to 02 national articles published.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

- Isolate and determine the chemical structure of 12 compounds that are derivatives of curcumin, including 01 new one.
- One student has protected her bachelor thesis and 01 Ph.D candidate is supported for education course by this project.
- 01 SCIE paper has published and one another has been reviewed R2 and under acceptance, in addition to 02 national articles published.
